A Snohomish County Superior Court jury on Monday convicted a South Everett man of first-degree murder in the grisly slaying of Rachel Burkheimer in September 2002

Burkheimer was shot to death in 2002 by a band of young criminals led by her ex-boyfriend, John Phillip “Diggy” Anderson. She was lured to a south Everett duplex, bound and beaten. Burkheimer, 18, was stuffed into a duffle bag and driven out to Reiter Road in east Snohomish County. Anderson forced her to lie down in the grave the kidnappers had dug and then shot her.
Anderson is serving a life sentence. Another man, John Alan Whitaker, also was sentenced to life behind bars after being convicted of murder in 2004. Nine years later the state Court of Appeals overturned Whitaker's conviction and granted him a new trial... The new trial is scheduled for November...
Whitaker was one of eight people charged and convicted in connection with Burkheimer's slaying.

The teen was forced to disrobe, hand over her jewelry and was ordered face down in the dirt, Snohomish County deputy prosecutor Julie Mohr said. She begged for mercy. Burkheimer was shot multiple times by her jealous ex-boyfriend, John “Diggy” Anderson.
Monday marked the first day of testimony in the retrial of one of the several young men implicated in the 2002 robbery, kidnapping and killing.
John Alan Whitaker, 35, is accused of assaulting Burkheimer, helping stuff her in the duffle bag, digging her grave, robbing her of her jewelry and trying to cover up the crime.

After a series of bizarre twists the day before, a jury on Thursday convicted Whitaker of aggravated murder and conspiracy to commit first-degree murder after six hours of deliberations. He faces a mandatory life sentence.
