Just when I thought the latest in technology would make a safer place for our courthouse and it workers/patrons, this happens...
EXCLUSIVE: Robert Gerald Eaton shot to death at Merced County Superior Courthouse...
The man shot dead in a Merced County Superior Courthouse courtroom Monday afternoon has been identified as Robert Eaton, 40, of Atwater. Eaton is the same man who crashed his car into the courthouse in April 2007, saying he was angry that he had been refused treatment by a local mental health facility.
Witnesses said Eaton walked through security at the courthouse carrying two large knives. He was shot dead by a sheriff's deputy inside Courtroom 2 at about 2:45 p.m., deputies said.
Witnesses say Eaton ran down the hall in the courthouse carrying a long knife in each hand.
"He didn't say anything," said witness Dartagnan Hutcherson, who was in Courtroom 2. "He just came in. He was out of breath."

I was told by one of our courthouse staff that the guards at the door don't even carry guns, only tasers. How effective could they have been?
