It looks like this could be part of the political spectrum with Senate Majority leader, Harry Reid (Utah) speaking out and asking for federal task force to intercede.
"I am a cheerleader for what is going on in Texas," Reid, D-Nevada, said on KUER's RadioWest broadcast from a Washington hotel. "I think Texas is doing what Utah and Arizona should have done decades ago."
Reid continued that, "To have what goes on in Arizona and in Utah go on year after year after year and people turn a blind eye to it, I think it is a travesty. I am embarrassed for the two states. . . . Utah politicians are afraid to do anything about it and I think that's wrong."

Speaking of politics, (and representatives of the law) I found the articles on Orrin Hatch I was looking for.
Bob Curran, director of an anti-polygamy group in St. George called Help the Child Brides, asked Hatch if
he knew girls as young as 13 and 14 were being forced into marriages with older men living in the nearby
twin polygamous towns of Hildale, Utah, and Colorado City, Ariz. "I wouldn't throw accusations around
unless you know they're true," Hatch cautioned Curran and another speaker, Sonja Blancke, who also
questioned the senator on his position. All I can say is I know people in Hildale who are polygamists who
are very fine people. You come and show me the evidence of children being abused there, and I'll get
involved. Bring the evidence to me.
And what does Senator Hatch have to say these days about his good polygamist friends? All a matter
for law enforcement says his office, and any comment would be inappropriate while the investigation
is ongoing. About that involvement he promised when evidence of wrongdoing was provided? Not likely
to happen is my guess.

Another article that goes into the politics in the fight against polygamy. Named are Robert F. Bennett, Orrin Hatch, Mike Leavitt, Mark Shurtleff, and Rodney Parker.
