In his haste to get away after being ticketed, 70 year old man stepped on the gas and .... didn't realize he was in reverse!

Police puzzled over driver who drove up and over squad car>

A man who had been pulled over and ticketed by police ran backward up and onto a Buffalo Grove squad car Friday morning, apparently in his haste to drive off.

Henry Raskin, 70, of Niles had been pulled over by a Buffalo Grove officer on the 400 block of Dundee Road around 11:30 a.m. Friday for driving 58 mph in a 35 mph zone, Sgt. Scott Kristiansen said.

The officer wrote the ticket and returned to the car, and Raskin got ready to drive away. Except he went flying backward.

"(He) apparently was going to pull away at a high rate of speed, but the only problem was that he was in reverse," Kristiansen said.

He said Raskin was not happy about getting a ticket. He said police are reviewing the squad car videotape to see what Raskin might also be charged with.

Well I guess this guy wolnt have a drivers license for long !

I hope everyone is OK, but I would love to see the dashcam video of this!

Apparently the older man thinks he should be able to do as he pleases, but really shouldn't even be out on the streets. I can only imagine how he acts around family members or regular citizens who get him angry if he did this around police.

I didn't realize the officer was sitting in the car when this happened. Thank goodness he's o.k.

Kristiansen said the 20-year veteran police officer was not injured, and the officer was wearing his seat belt when Raskin's car hit the squad car.

I don't think this guy had criminal intent in driving up the front of the cruiser in back of him. I think he just made a really stupid mistake. After having his name and car plastered all over by the media and his insurance and driving license taking a ding, they should let him off the hook. I would bet his lesson has been learned.

i dont think he should be let off the hook.

he was attempting to flee from the scene. that very easily could have wound up in a high speed chase, potentially putting MANY lives in danger

He wasn't fleeing the scene, the article stated he was pulling off after getting a ticket and didn't realize he was in reverse. People (some, not all) kinda "punch it" when driving off in a fit of anger after getting a ticket.

He could have killed that officer. That's a pretty severe reaction to a ticket.

More police officers are injured or killed in traffic accidents than most people realize. This gentleman needs to be tested to be sure that he's still capable of driving, IMO.

Things Not to Say to a Police Officer

Sorry, Officer, I didn't realize my radar detector wasn't plugged in.

And that hooker I met at the AIDS clinic said you were a nice guy.

Hey, you must've been doin' about 125 mph to keep up with me! Good job!

That uniform makes your *advertiser censored* look really big.

Excuse me. Is "stick up" hyphenated?

I thought you had to be in relatively good physical condition to be a Police Officer.

You don't happen to have any beer in your car?

I was going to be cop, but I decided to finish high school instead.

Bad Cop! No Donut!

Your not gonna check the trunk, are you?

Gee, that gut sure doesn't inspire confidence.

Did you happen to attend the "Barney Fife" Police Academy?

Didn't I see you get your *advertiser censored* kicked on Cops?

I can't reach my license unless you hold my beer.

Wow, You look just like the guy in the picture on my girlfriend's nightstand.

When you smack the crap outta me, make sure you smile pretty for the camcorder.

I bet I could grab that gun before you finish writing my ticket!

Is it true that people become cops because they are too dumb to work at McDonalds?

I pay your salary!

So, uh, you on the take, or what?

Those sirens are hurting my ears. Turn them off or I am not speaking to you.

So what if I was speeding? Whatcha gonna do about it Mr. Hotshot?

Gee, Officer, that's terrific! The last officer only gave me a warning, too!

Aren't you the guy from the Village People?

Do you know why you pulled me over? Okay, just so one of us does.

I was trying to keep up with traffic. Yes, I know there is no other car around, that's how far they are ahead of me.

So, are you still cwabby because your mommy didn't let you pway with your whittle gun when you were whittle?

Sorry I can't hear you over the radio. No, I am not turning it down. I love this song. Either speak up, or just leave me alone.

What do you mean, "Have I been drinking?" You're the trained specialist.

Well, when I reached down to pick up my bag of crack, my gun fell off my lap and got lodged between the brake pedal and gas pedal, forcing me to speed out of control.

Hey, man, you want a hit?

Hey is that a 9mm? That's nothing compared to this .44 magnum.

Hey, can you give me another one of those full cavity searches?

Yep. IMO, all drivers over 65 should be tested yearly.
Elderly people have a slower reaction time, can't see as well and can't hear. Those combined are an accident waiting to happen.

excom,

You are right. I guess I would want to know more about this guy and whether he has a criminal history before throwing the book at him.

I don't think this reverse thing was any criminal intent but rather his befuddled reaction to the stress of the ticket. When I lived in Florida there were several instances of older people doing the exact same thing or thinking they had their foot on the brake when it was the accelerator.

I remember one instance years ago where this older gentleman almost took down the Sarasota airport. That car went careening into the support columns and it was a big mess. Several people were injured too.

IMO after you reach a certain age you should be required to take a driving test when renewing your license.

I guess he really showed that cop didn't he! LOL

He sounds too old to drive, if he didn't react quickly enough when his car started moving in reverse. I'm sure we've all done it - you hit the gas, realize the car is not moving the direction you thought, hit the brake, shift into the correct gear, and go again. Having it in reverse and hitting the gas is normal. Not being able to correct this mistake before he hit something, and hit it hard - that's not normal.

JMO, but I don't tolerate "peeling out" in teens, so I don't see why that behavior would be acceptable in adults. Cars aren't toys and need to be treated with the same respect you would when handling a fire arm.

I witnessed an "angry guy" peel out of a parking lot and end up wrapped around a tree. I called 911 and stayed with them until the ambulance arrived ... what happened to that couple, well ... I still find it upsetting. Being angry and driving is just as dangerous as being drunk and driving.

When it happened to my brother and a mailbox paid the price, we called it "Inadvertant Pedal Misapplication." He called it "Stuck Accellerator."
