FL - Lt. John Alley, 26, Pensacola, May 2008Family searching for missing pilot
Sunday afternoon, more than 100 friends of a missing Air Force pilot scoured the woods around Scenic Highway trying to find the newlywed and soon-to-be father.
Family members coordinated the search for 2nd Lt. John Alley, 26, a former missionary whose car was found Saturday wrecked in some brush off the Escambia Bay side of Scenic Highway near Summit Boulevard.
Alley's wife, Emily, said she last saw her husband, who is going through pilot training at Whiting Field Naval Air Station, about 6:30 a.m. Friday. She woke when he kissed her goodbye as he does every morning, she said.
John Alley went to work but did not return home. His 1996 green Toyota Corolla was found early Saturday. The car had struck a guardrail and veered off into some bushes.
The keys were in the ignition. John Alley's wallet with cash and credit cards was on the seat, and there was no blood in the car.
"He's probably injured and is disoriented and has amnesia," Emily Alley said.
Search crews and K-9 units searched the area but turned up no clues. No one fitting John Alley's description was admitted to area hospitals.
The Pensacola Police Department's officer investigating the case was not available for comment Sunday.
Saturday, members of the couple's church and Alley's unit at Whiting Field combed the area of the accident, knocked on doors and posted flyers of the missing man all over town.
John Alley's father, Dave Alley, flew to Pensacola from Utah to help, as did the young man's sister, Julie Allen, who lives in Colorado.
"He walked away from that accident," Julie Allen said. "We are calling on the citizens of Pensacola to keep their eyes open and help us find John."
Family members said John Alley's disappearance doesn't make sense. He and Emily Alley are newlyweds who moved to Milton 10 months ago. Emily Alley is more than four months pregnant, and the couple are looking forward to their first child.
Both are devout Christians, Emily Alley said, and neither has so much as taken a drink of alcohol or smoked a cigarette in their entire lives. John Alley spent two years in Venezuela spreading the gospel.
When Emily Alley got up Friday morning after her husband had gone to work, she found a note he had left, as he often had, telling her how he was looking forward to taking more long walks with her in the future.
Credit card receipts show that Alley purchased gas in the area shortly before 3 p.m. Friday and again at 9 p.m. that night, Emily Alley said. The credit card used for the gas purchases was found in John Alley's wallet.
His cell phone also was retrieved from the car, and it showed no outgoing phone calls had been made since he disappeared. A text message she sent to his cell phone had been checked, however, she said.
Emily Alley said her husband was under a lot of stress with his pilot training but does not believe that has anything to do with his disappearance.
The couple live near Whiting Field, and Emily Alley said she was not sure why her husband's car was found in Pensacola.
"If people want to volunteer, we need help," Emily Alley said.
There is a photo in the article. I'm not sure what to think about this...hoping he was just taking some time off due to stress?
