By Franci Richardson, Globe Correspondent | August 2, 2005
State officials determined yesterday that the remains of a hand found Saturday in the woods in Bridgewater belonged to a person, not an animal, a prosecutor confirmed.

''It is human," Bridget Norton Middleton, an assistant district attorney in Plymouth County, said yesterday after a state forensic anthropologist made the determination.

The discovery has been deemed suspicious, and an investigation is underway to determine whether the hand resulted from a homicide, Norton Middleton said.

Within hours of learning it was a human hand, State Police officers were scouring the same area of woods for more body parts, authorities said.
Investigators found no other body parts yesterday, an official said, and it was unclear whether officials would return to search the wooded area again today.

Authorities are waiting to conduct DNA tests on the hand to determine whether it belonged to a woman or man, Norton Middleton said.
''At this point, we do not know the sex, and that would require further DNA testing," she said. ''That is planned to be done."

Two people walking through the woods off Scotland Street called local police about 3 p.m. Saturday to report that they found a hand severed just above the wrist.

Bridgewater police officials declined to comment yesterday.

One official said the hand had been in the woods for three to 10 years. Norton Middleton would only say: ''It is not days old; it is a number of years old."

Anyone with information is asked to call State Police at the Plymouth district attorney's office at 508-923-4205.

I don't know if anything has ever come of this case - there was never any follow up in the local media.

Interesting, I wonder if they will find a second hand?

Could this be the missing hand of one of Massachusetts most famous mystery's; that of " The Lady In The Dunes"

Bridgewater is on the mainland and this mystery lady was found on the cape, but it's possible.

You can find a blog post and Video about the Lady of the Dunes on my MySpace page:
