VT - Phillip "Chip" Patch, 21, Lake Champlain, June 2008 - Missing Canoeist

    Crews Search for Missing Canoeist

    Highgate Springs, Vermont - June 10, 2008
Tuesday's violent storms caught some boaters in Lake Champlain by surprise, prompting a large search and rescue effort. The storm lasted no more than 15 minutes, but left all kinds of damage in its wake. Residents living along Mississquoi Bay in Highgate Springs say the wind produced some of the biggest waves they've ever seen.
"It was like a giant egg beater. That's what I say. You couldn't see the white caps," said Mike Roach, a resident who lives in the bay

Vermont State Police now say the search for a missing boater on Lake Champlain is a recovery effort, and no longer a rescue effort. Phillip "Chip" Patch, 21, of Swanton, is presumed drowned after his boat overturned Tuesday during a thunderstorm.
A crew from the U.S. Coast Guard actually worked around the clock last night looking for Patch. And crews are back in the water this afternoon once again.
Patch and Thomas Lapine, 21, were caught out on the lake Tuesday when wind gusts in excess of 50 miles an hour swept across the lake overturning their canoe. Boaters managed to rescue Lapine, but Patch was never seen again.

Family And Friends of a Missing Swanton Man Find Closure

Family, friends and police have been searching for Phillip Patch since his canoe capsized almost two weeks ago. One friend remembers Patch coming into his store and says he was a great guy.
"He was a very nice kid. His father is very upstanding. It's a sad situation all together," Gilbert Gagner said.
Gagner says over the past two weeks Patch's dad stopped in at his General Store everyday to hear if anyone found his son.
"It was hard to see him everyday search for his son, many people in the community helped out with the search," Gagner said.
Every day since Patch went missing boats searched Lake Champlain and each time came up empty.
