UT - Tooele, human skull found in attic, Jun'08 - Ancient

The picture's are so detailed. Hair, eyelids, even eyebrows. I'll be curious to hear the answer to this mystery. Locals with a wicked since of humor are saying it's T-Bag or DB Cooper from the show Prison Break.

Slideshow and brief story at the below link:

That is creepy. I found another article that says the skull appears to have been there for decades: http://www.localnews8.com/Global/sto...av=menu554_2_3
I wonder how old the house is.

I'd love to wander on over there and watch the cadaver dogs in action. More articles and videos at the below links:

Roofers made an unsettling discovery while working on a house in Tooele. Now police have a mystery to solve. The roofers found a human skull while they were tearing apart the attic's roof. The family living there is baffled. Police are sure it's a human skull that's at least several years decomposed. Right now, cadaver dogs are searching the attic for more clues. Police suspect it's an unsolved crime, unless something steers them in another direction.

Medical examiners took it, and police plan to let a cadaver dog loose inside and around the house to search for any other body parts.

I'm hearing it was built in 1910. I think I know where that house is. I might have to go for a drive.

The Dupaixs have lived there eight years. The previous owners were there for six decades, according to neighbors.

Police want to talk to the children of the previous owners to find out if this skull could fit any unsolved murders. They're also hoping for clues from the medical examiner.

Tooele Police Capt. Steve Newkirk said, "It was actually pretty much sealed in a portion of the attic that had no access." How it got there and its identity is still much of a mystery.

Police are still looking at all options from an unsolved crime to a missing person or an artifact. Newkirk said, "There's some indication that the previous owner was into anthropology."

Cadaver dogs spent the night searching the home for other possible body parts, but nothing was found.

The Dupaixs’ house was built in 1910 on land owned by Peter Droubay. It is unclear whether or not Droubay himself lived in the house, but according to the Tooele County Recorder’s Office, the house was purchased by a chiropractor named Heber J. McKay in 1928. McKay turned the house over to the Home Owners Loan Corporation in 1936 and it was purchased the same year by Rex and Helen Stutzneggar. The couple raised their family in the home for 64 years until the Dupaixs purchased it in 2000.

The skull was found resting between the attic ceiling and some storage cabinets that lined the attic wall. The roof had been re-shingled by a previous owner and there were two layers of shingles covering the skull’s resting place, according to Paul.

Interesting. If only the skin wasn't on it, and they gave some more and better photos, I could probably take a stab at sex and ancestry, although sexing is better done with the pelvis.

I wish I had more pics for you! Going by the pics we do have, any guess as to how long the skull had been there?

Lol, I guess there won't be an interesting story attached to the skull. I find it interesting an American Indian skull was possibly brought back from an overseas expedition, because that's where American Indians live...riiiight....

I've heard of skeletons in your closet... a skull in your roof is a new one, for me.

There is no telling how long it has been there... look at those mummies unearthed in the middle east... thousands of years old and they are more intact than this skull.

-- photography / Troy Boman A human skull was discovered in the attic of a Tooele home Monday afternoon by contractors remodeling the roof.

Paul and Karen Dupaix had hired Superior Exterior to tear down and rebuild the roof of their 100 South Street home, which is almost 100 years old. But as the construction crew was pulling off shingles around 4 p.m., one of the workers noticed the skull through the slats underneath.

slideshow A skull discovered in a Tooele attic last week has been determined to be Native American, and likely more than 100 years old.

“We know for sure that this individual was a Native American, and the skull appears to be female, but we’re not entirely sure of that,” said Assistant State Archaeologist Ron Rood. “We don’t know exactly how long ago this person lived, but my gut feeling from just looking at the skull is that it’s really, really old — very likely over 100 years.”

Mystery skull could be as old as 17th century

Radio carbon dating has revealed that a skull found in a Tooele attic in June belongs to an American Indian female who died in her early 20s and lived between 1620 and 1800, according to Assistant State Archaeologist Ron Rood.

The skull, which was discovered during repair work on the roof of Paul and Karen Dupaix century-old home, was sent to a lab in Florida to determine its age about a month ago.

“The dating is complicated because comparatively the skull is not as old as the things we usually carbon date, which is why the range of possible dates is so wide,” said Rood.
