Unsolved murder case solved after 23 years

It's like a story out of the CBS drama 'Cold Case.'
After re-opening an unsolved murder investigation a few years ago, Adams County authorities have found the killer and victim's identities from a 23 year-old murder.
Back in 1985, folks called the victim "Marvin the Mummy," due to the decomposed state of the man's body when he was found in a rock quarry west of Lima.

On April 09, 1985 the Adams County Sheriff's Department was notified of the discovery of a deceased unidentified white male (approximately 20-30 years of age). The body was discovered by a private citizen. The body was located near an abandoned rock quarry on property rented by the Western IL Stone Company. This area is in the northwest portion of Adams County, IL (approximately 4 miles east of Meyer, IL) and is a rural area. The property was adjacent to County Road 0543E. Upon arrival officers of the ISP and Adams County Sheriff's Dept. observed the unidentified white male body which was partially covered. An autopsy was performed which concluded the cause of death was the result of multiple blunt trauma to the head and torso. The individual was found wearing "segefield" blue jeans, blue insulated underwear, gray socks (no shoes), a white printed t-shirt was located with the individual with the following printing "Captain Anderson's Restaurant Panama City Beach, FL." Investigators also noted a distinct tattoo on the victim's right forearm (a skeleton holding an inverted shotgun).

Thanks, Carl. I'll just mention that this is very close to NE Missouri and that sometimes these vigilante/gang skeleton-with-gun tattoos only get their gunsmoke added on once someone's killed someone else, apparently.

Many of the cases at this Illinois unsolved site seem not to have made it to NamUs.

I know he was identified awhile ago but Murder Book did an episode on his case which gave an update on the perpetrator.

Spence admitted to killing Brannon after the victim had made an unwanted sexual advance towards him during the pair's crime spree through the southeast.

Spence hit Brannon with a baseball bat and drove over him twice in his car. He then drove 400 miles before dumping the body in a rock quarry in Adams County, Illinois.

They played the police video of Spence's confession and it was very disturbing to hear him explain it all in a nonchalant manner. I felt bad for Thomas Brannon. Sure he was a criminal (he had served time) but he was still killed in a ruthless manner simply for putting himself out there to someone he trusted. When he got his name back, no one claimed his remains.

The episode also said that Spence got released early due to time served and "good behavior".

I watched this episode, too. Really fascinating. I looked it up and saw Spence is already back in prison for robbing a lady at gunpoint.
What was so sad to me, was to learn Mr. Brannon's body was never claimed and he is buried in a pauper's grave, in Adams County. No one should ever be that alone in this world.
