Durham, N.C. — A Durham couple charged with kidnapping, rape and assault was involved with a satanic cult, a prosecutor said Monday.
Joy Johnson and Joseph Craig appeared at a bond hearing Monday. A judge set Craig's bond at $590,000, but refused a prosecution request to increase Johnson's bond from $270,000 to $500,000.

Prosecutors said a man and a woman met Craig through a shared interest in Satan worship, but the pair never consented to physical abuse.
Craig shackled his victims to beds, kept them in dog cages and starved them inside his Albany Street home, prosecutors said. He was charged with beating the man with a cane and a cord and with raping the woman.

"This goes well above what they were interested in doing," an assistant Durham County district attorney said.

Wonder who else they ..or others they know..have done this to in the past? I find this hard to believe this is one isolated incident.

Whats this world coming to when you cant network with self proclaimed satanists without getting tangled up with some dangerous unbalanced person?
Doesnt everyone know they are all earth worshiping, benign, anything bad they do comes back on them seven fold ,responsible, pagan teddy bears?
Apparently this guy didnt get the memo...

I never thought that satan worshipping with sacrifices etc.. really happened.

I thought it was urban legend-esque.

I guess I was wrong - ick.

I agree with kline, what did they expect?

I mean could it be, maybe, SATAN!!

sounds to me like this has more to do with their version of BDSM than about being satanist. they forgot about the consentual part and went straight to slavery with these people.

WOW, I hope there are no Satanists on WS or they will be flaming you all for bashing their religion.
You all are so intolerant (sarcasim)

Seriously, when you hook up with people who worship satan, do you expect cute happy bunnies and flowers?
No, you expect everything you read about in this case.
FOOLS!

Wow, so they're saying she was vice chair of the Durham Democratic Party and he was a member of some UN club.
I'm shocked they were able to maintain a front to participate in Executive Committee functions while holding slaves... crazy. I'm very involved in the REC and I just can't imagine what I would be thinking if our VC was arrested for something like this!

(sputter) are you kidding?

January 2009:
If a satanic sex case in Durham makes it to trial, the city's police chief could potentially be called as a witness for the defense.
Eyewitness News has learned Chief Jose Lopez was questioned about visits he and his wife made to a home where a man and woman claimed they were beaten and raped over a six month period.

Jan 2009:

District Court judge dismissed a charge today against Diana Palmer, the former Durham County Democratic Party official accused this summer of being an accessory in a sexual assault case...

Investigators claimed she removed possible evidence from the home of Joy Suzanne Johnson, who had been the party's third vice chairwoman, and Johnson’s husband, Joseph Scott Craig...

Defense lawyers have described the case as “consensual sadomasochism gone awry.”

It doesn't say what charges they were actually convicted of in the end...
