GA - Girls' Umpire calls 911, arrested as RSO
I guess the company that hires the umpires isn't doing background checks.
A girls softball umpire who claimed he was robbed by gunmen at a Cherokee County ballpark was himself arrested after deputies discovered he was a registered sex offender.
Gerald Stephens, 48, called 911 on June 28 and reported that he had been robbed by three men with guns at the South Cherokee Recreation Association ball fields in Woodstock, Cherokee sheriff's Sgt. Jay Baker said.
Baker said Stephens, who is employed by Global Sports Association, "claimed he had just been to the bank to get money to pay the other umpires when three men approached him in the parking lot, tied his hands together and stole the money before running into the woods."
During the course of the investigation, detectives discovered that Stephens was a sex offender registered as living in Douglas County.
Baker said Stephens told detectives, however, that he lived in Paulding County.
Stephens was arrested and charged with violation of the sex offender registry and making false statements.
"Although the robbery is still under investigation, Stephens' account of the incident has changed and there are no witnesses to the event," Baker said.
The Cherokee sheriff's office issued a release about the arrest on Thursday.

These RSO's are a pack of liars. Liars.
Yeah, and good lookout on the background checks is right angelmom. Again we learn that the system is not keeping our kids safe, and the sex offender registry isn't working all that well. Or is it?
