WI - Jared P. Dion, 21, La Crosse, April 2004

The body of a University of Wisconsin-La Crosse student who had been missing since Saturday was found Thursday in the Mississippi River, police said.

Lt. Bob Berndt said authorities had confirmed that the body was that of Jared P. Dion, 21.

The body was recovered about 7:50 a.m. by members of the La Crosse Area Dive & Rescue Team in the south end of the Riverside Park levy, Police Chief Edward Kondracki said.

    Unhappy

Quote from the link=Several young men have been discovered drowned in the river in recent years after being missing from the downtown bar area.

Could there be more to this? Maybe they need to put up a fence along the river near the bars!

While I did not personally know Jared, my son is part of a wrestling program that wrestled LaCrosse. I have seen him at many matches. He always seemed like a nice kid.

For a more thorough discussion of the possible crime, go to themat.com. Click on message boards. Then, click college. There's a lot of info there.

The LaCrosse Police need to conduct a more thorough investigation of these mysterious drownings. Five, now six, in seven years? His alcohol content was .27. He was waiting for the shuttle bus, disappeared, friends left on the bus w/o him. The river is a winding half mile away, through streets. Did someone offer him a ride home? Is a serial killer involved? Could a policeman be involved? Interesting case.

Just one more comment. We seem to focus more on missing young women than missing young men.

I agree completely with you. When I first read about these young men a red flag went up. Something just wasn't right about the picture. Then they said
there wasn't anything to indicate foul play, I thought why are they not investigating these cases more than they did. Maybe they are and do not want the public to be alarmed. Something just isn't right.

I wonder if the date rape drug would show up after the bodies had been in the water. Some of these young men were found very shortly after they went missing. Also I wonder if they were checked for anal trauma. Of these I wonder how many were gay and if anal trauma was present was it considered to be normal? I find it interesting that soooo many young men from the same general areas went missing. I sure hope someone from law enforcment is looking into these as possible homicides.

"There might be a slim chance there is a serial killer out there," La Crosse Mayor John Medinger said.

The mayor says there's a slim chance, and there's to be no outside investigation? Ridiculous! This is an example of a whitewash if I've ever heard of one! Two of the drowning were on the same date, April 10 (1999 and 2004). How much of a coincidence is this?

The university is going to conduct an aggressive alcohol abuse program. And in a few years things will be back to normal - unless, of course, there is a serial killer.

There is another site that mentioned that the University of MN is on the same river. They haven't had 6 drownings in 7 years! Something is definitely amiss in LaCrosse.

Maybe my mind just wanders, but the first thought I had when I heard of his disappearance was that a man lured him away with promises of a ride, drugs, or sex and killed him. The boy was very drunk and quite young...probably wasn't making clear decisions...which is just what such a predator would be out looking for. My heart goes out to his family and friends.
    Just my opinion anyway... cheers!

Or, a predator may have just offered him a ride back to campus. My guess is that any kid would have taken up such an offer. I only hope the parents DEMAND a thorough investigation. Something just isn't right.

This is a post from themat.com about another school, Old Dominion:

"Old Dominion has THREE dorms directly adjacent to rivers in the Norfolk, Va. area. One of which, I've even made the point of jumping in during Hurricane Isabel. Not smart, I admit, but we've got three bars within legitimate "stumbling" distance from the dorms, and you must pass a small river or creek to get to your room.

In the 7 years I've been at ODU, NO ONE has ever drowned stumbling from the bars or jumping off the piers by the sailing center (and there are currents in these Chesapeake Bay tributaries). I think the La-Crosse Police really need to realize that seven in on one campus is NOT a coincidence."

I know nothing about this case, but the first thing that came to my mind was initiation/pledge week to the various campus "fraternity houses," and how they can get out of hand. Leaving a totally intoxicated, pledgie out someplace alone, with instructions to find their way back to the house.....something of that nature.. Just a thought.

And yes, it could be aserial killer, too.

I had not realized that all these persons were in the same area as Jared. Makes the serial killer theory even more likely.

Four missing people -- just a tragic coincidence?

In the two weeks after Halloween, three college men disappeared from Minneapolis, Collegeville, and Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Around the same time, a 21-year-old woman in Brainerd failed to show up for work, and has not been seen since. Despite constant media exposure and massive search efforts, all four are still missing, and authorities are still waiting for the one tip or stroke of luck that might yield some answers. If the cases are linked, a break in one might solve them all. But at this point it seems just as likely all four are only connected by a tragic coincidence.

All four are still missing? Nothing?

The City of LaCrosse is holding a meeting at the high school to dispell everyone's theory/fears about a serial killer. I hope the townspeople start a riot.

Beset with complaints about the police handling of a string of deaths in the Mississippi River, the La Crosse Police Department is planning a town hall meeting Thursday to address rumors that a serial killer is lurking on the shores and police aren't doing enough to catch him.
