    The remains were found on July 18. It is unknown how long the body had been there.

    Decomposing remains found in Preble County

    WEST ALEXANDRIA — The discovery of decomposing remains on unoccupied property in the 7000 block of Lexington-Salem Road is being investigated as a homicide, the Preble County Sheriff's Office said.

    Two persons looking for scrap metal on the property northeast of this Preble County village discovered the remains about noon, July 18, Sheriff Mike Simpson's office said. The names of the two people were not released.

    Detectives believe the remains are that of a male, who appeared to have been wearing "flip-flop" type beach sandals and Chaps brand name denim jeans, the sheriff's office said.

    EATON — The skeletal remains of a man found in July 2008 on an abandoned property near West Alexandria are those of a registered sex offender from Dayton, the Preble County Sheriff’s Office reported Tuesday, Feb. 2.

    Simpson said someone found the remains July 18, 2008, inside a collapsed barn at 7016 Lexington Salem Road. He said the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office identified the man using a national database and DNA taken from his remains.

    The victim is a white male who was 54 at the time his remains were found. The victim was a resident of Dayton after moving from Broward County, Fla., and was a registered sex offender.

    Deputies are now moving forward with their investigation. At this point, the case will remain a homicide investigation.
