KS - Jack Lee Howe, 87, Cowley County, 1 Aug 2008
4 August 08
The Cowley County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the disappearance of 87-year-old Jack Lee Howe.
Howe was reported missing by his neighbor Sunday and had not been seen since Noon on Friday. His children, who live out of state, were notified and told authorities they had not heard from him recently and do not know of his whereabouts.
Howe’s pick-up truck was found abandoned on a railroad right of way south of Caldwell, KS.
He is described at 87 years old, 5’8” tall, about 100 pounds, very thin build, gray hair, brown eyes and usually wears glasses. He was last seen wearing very light colored blue jeans, a red long sleeve shirt and light colored suspenders.
Howe has recently become forgetful and sometimes confused and may be starting to suffer from dementia.
Anyone with any information is asked to call the Cowley County Sheriffs Office at 620-221-5444 or the Sumner County Sheriff’s Office at 620-326-8941.

Surveillance video shows Jack Howe leaving a Winfield Dillon's store around nine Friday night. Authorities found Howe's blue pick-up truck on Saturday. It was more than 40 miles from his home near the Oklahoma border. A neighbor reported Jack Howe missing on Sunday.
Investigators launched a massive search in the air and on the ground near where his truck was found. But they found no sign of him. Now they believe he may have been picked up and given a ride. "Whoever might have picked him up might not know he's a missing person," said Cowley County Undersheriff Don Read. "That person might not know where he belongs."
Howe's family says Jack is showing early signs of dementia. They believe he may have gotten lost on the way home from the store. But the ground search has been called off, so finding Jack Howe may depend entirely on the public's help.
Investigators searched Jack Howe's truck, but didn't find anything suspicious. But they're worried about him because of his age and the summer heat.
Officials are focusing their search on truck stops, hoping someone there may recognize Howe's picture.
Here's a new description of what Jack Howe may be wearing: blue flannel long sleeve shirt, light blue jeans, red suspenders, and a blue baseball cap.
