Texas authorities seek custody of FLDS kids, again

Wasn't there a statement from an FLDS spokesman when the kids were in foster care before that the FLDS agreed to cooperate with CPS if the kids were released back to their mother's? Well it seems that some of them may not have agreed to that.

Child Protective Services has asked a judge to return the children to foster care because their mothers have allegedly refused to limit their contact with men accused of being involved in underage marriages.

Texas seeks custody of teen Jeffs allegedly wed

The mother of a girl allegedly given in marriage at age 12 to jailed polygamist leader Warren Jeffs refused to answer questions Monday from attorneys for the state child welfare agency who had begun presenting evidence.

The state wants to remove the girl, now 14, and an 11-year-old brother from the mother's care, saying she has refused to guarantee the girl won't have contact with men accused of being involved in underage marriages. The girl's father allegedly blessed her marriage to Jeffs and the underage marriages of at least two sisters.

Looks like the mother in question is a Jessop.

And it looks like they are trying to take Barlow's two daughters.

In the new CPS petitions seeking foster placement for the eight children, the agency detailed alleged underage marriages involving the children's fathers or stepfathers, though only one faces any criminal charges.

Rod Parker, a church spokesman, said that even though the families are getting individual hearings this time, the argument that they shouldn't be allowed to retain custody of their children remains unfair.

The issue, as it was in the earlier case, is "whether the children are in any immediate danger simply because their parents choose to raise them in this religion," he said. "The substance of what they're doing here is fundamentally the same."

Parker also noted that the church issued a statement in June saying it would not bless underage marriages.

Barbara Jessop took the Fifth more than 50 times under intense questions from CPS lawyers Monday afternoon.
A wife of Merril Jessop, the leader of the Fundamentalist LDS Church's YFZ Ranch in Texas, is fighting efforts by Child Protective Services to place two of her children back into foster care.

    FLDS Families Could Lose Kids--Again

A hearing in San Angelo today to determine the fate of eight children from the Yearning for Zion Ranch in Schleicher County could be the first in a series of attempts by Texas Family and Protective Services to place more of the kids from he polygamist ranch back into foster care, 1200 WOAI news reports.

Lawyers reached settlements before hearings were held Tuesday on the other children they had sought to place back in foster care. The five girls in those cases can stay with their mothers, provided the women restrict contact with men accused of being involved in underage marriages and comply with other, more routine custody-related court orders. The agreements technically put the children in state custody, but the state has agreed to let them stay with their mothers as long as they comply with the agreements.

In the case of the 14-year-old allegedly married to Jeffs, Walther said she felt she had to place the girl in foster care because Jessop "was unable to provide assurances that she'd be able to protect the child in the future."

On Monday, Jessop, 55, refused to answer roughly 50 questions asked by attorneys for Child Protective Services, including the names of her children, what constituted abuse and whether a parent had an obligation to protect her children.

"I stand on the Fifth (Amendment)," she said repeatedly.
