CHARLEVOIX COUNTY -- Sheriff's officials here are resuming an investigation to find a 69-year-old woman who went missing 20 years ago, after an anonymous person contacted authorities with information about Victoria Salisz's disappearance. Lt. Michael Wheat and Sheriff George Lasater are requesting that the unidentified tipster contact them again. Salisz was last seen April 15, 1988 near her Boyne Valley Township home. The initial probe included the state police and Upper Peninsula agencies.

At the time Salisz worked as a waitress at a Boyne City restaurant called “Pippin’s Restaurant.”

“The owner of the Pippin’s Restaurant at that time said that Victoria had not shown up for work for three days and this was not like her, this was out of character for her,” Lasater said.

Deputies went to her home on Denise Road in Boyne Valley Township. There, they found her car parked in the driveway, and her purse still on the table, but no Victoria Salisz. And despite an intensive six month search, neither she, nor her remains, have ever been found.

For 20 years this case has been silent, but now the author of an unsigned letter is bringing the mystery back to life.

“I have received two letters, one during the initial investigation and the second one was recently from the same person with the same theory which the theory made a lot of sense to me,” Lasater said.

While Sheriff Lasater wouldn’t divulge the details of the letters he is asking that the person behind the letters to come forward.

Date given for last seen in article was 15 APR 1988

Charlevoix County Sheriff George T. Lasater said the most notorious unsolved case on the books in his county is the 1988 disappearance of Victoria Marie Salisz. Salisz was last seen near her DeNise Road home in Boyne Valley Township on or about April 15, 1988. She was 69 at the time.

"Before I put my badge on the desk and walk away from this job, I'd like to solve that case," Lasater said.

At the time the sheriff's department conducted extensive searches of the area surrounding Salisz' home, but turned up no clues. Police have long believed that Salisz's son, Stephen Salisz, and his girlfriend, Beth Webb, know something about what happened to Victoria. On Jan. 28, 1991, a special one-man grand jury began probing the disappearance of Victoria Salisz.

The grand jury wanted to question Stephen Salisz and Beth Webb but never got the chance. The survivalist couple had armed themselves with weapons and home-made grenades, hopped on mountain bikes and headed for the hills. On Feb. 4, 1991, police caught up with them at Springvale and CCC roads in Chandler Township. They were arrested following a nearly one-hour stand off between police. They were later convicted of numerous charges stemming from the stand-off and were sentenced to prison time. Both completed their prison sentences in the mid 1990s. Lasater said neither has ever offered any information to shed light on what happened to Victoria Salisz.

Circumstances of Disappearance
Victoria Salisz was reported missing by her employer on April 23, 1988, when she failed to report for work. She was last seen walking in the yard at her home.

Several in-depth investigations over the years by the sheriff’s office, Michigan State Police and several Upper Peninsula police agencies have failed to turn up any trace of Salisz.

SPECIAL REPORT: Missing In Northern Michigan: Victoria Salisz
“I was working afternoons and the day shift deputy that I relieved indicated that we had a missing person over on the east side of the county.”

It was April of 1988 and that missing person was Victoria Salisz, a 69-year-old woman from Boyne Falls.

“For whatever word, we had these sixth senses sometimes that something is wrong with this picture so having the sense kicked in, I called the Sheriff at the time, George Lasater and had him come out,” explains Charlevoix County Sheriff, Don Schneider.

Investigators knew immediately something wasn’t right.

The Charlevoix County sheriff wants to solve the cold case of a woman who went missing more than 30 years ago.

Sheriff Chuck Vondra says he has a personal connection to her.

Victoria Salisz of Boyne Falls was 69 when she went missing in 1988.

State police recently used a drone to take photos of Salisz’ former property.

Sheriff Vondra says a dig is now planned later this month.

The sheriff says he worked as a bus boy at a Boyne City restaurant with Salisz in 1988.

He called her a “kind, sweet lady.”

Vondra doesn’t want to disclose every detail. But he told The Associated Press that people who were in prison with a potential suspect have been interviewed. DNA also has been collected from family members.

“I pulled the case off the shelf a year ago,” said Vondra, who was the undersheriff before being elected sheriff in 2016. “You want to give closure to anyone who needs it. This area is small. Everyone knew her. Everyone is still interested in the case.”

In 2014, WPBN-TV reported that Salisz’ car was in her driveway when she vanished, and her purse and keys were inside the house. Vondra’s predecessor, Don Schneider, recalled how investigators excavated part of a cemetery after someone said her body might have been stashed in a burial vault. They found nothing.

“The case has advanced,” Vondra said Tuesday. “There’s nothing you can do in this case that’s not helpful. Whether it opens a door or closes a door, it’s helpful.”

FBI seeks help solving 1988 missing persons case in northern Michigan

The FBI and Charelvoix County Sheriff’s Office are asking for help solving a 32-year-old missing persons case involving a woman who vanished after leaving her restaurant job.

Victoria Salisz was last seen on April 15, 1988, when she left her job at Pippins Restaurant in Boyne City. She was scheduled to work the following day, but never showed up.

Salisz’s son, Stephen, and his girlfriend were living in the back of the family’s farm at the time and neither of them saw her after April 15, 1988. A coworker from Pippins Restaurant filed a missing persons report with police a week after Salisz was last seen.

Investigators found her car parked near her home with the keys in the ignition.

Police and the FBI are asking the public to come forward with any clues that could help the investigation.

Poor lady, I have the impression that she was murdered by her son at the request of her father, knowing that she had a special condition...

Details of Disappearance

Victoria was last seen by her brother-in-law, walking in the backyard of her home on DeNise Road in Boyne Valley Township, Michigan on April 15, 1988. She lived with her husband, who suffered from memory lapses, so the date she was last seen is considered somewhat tentative. Her boss at the Pippin’s Restaurant in Boyne City, Michigan, where she worked as a waitress, called the police after Victoria didn't show up for work three days in a row.

Investigators went to her house and saw Victoria's car in the driveway and her purse and keys on the dining room table, but she was gone. She has never been heard from again. Her family suggested she might have gone to Detroit, Michigan to visit friends, but police thought it was suspicious that her car and belongings were left behind.

Authorities believe Victoria's son, Stephen Salisz Jr., may know more than he has said about what happened to his mother. He was reportedly camping in the woods behind her home, boiling sap into maple syrup and looking for mushrooms, at the time of her disappearance.

In January 1991, a grand jury began investigating Victoria's disappearance, and Stephen was called to testify. He refused to appear in court and dropped out of sight with his girlfriend, Beth Webb. They armed themselves with weapons including homemade grenades and left on their mountain bikes.

Stephen was held in contempt for his non-appearance in court. In February, the police found him and Webb and when they tried to arrest them, the couple attacked them. Stephen and Webb were arrested after a one-hour standoff.

Both were initially ruled incompetent to stand trial. On the witness stand, during his competency hearing, Stephen claimed he was a Green Beret and a secret CIA operative tasks with helping protect the United States, and that his mother was a Nazi and Nazis had invaded the country.

Stephen and Webb were ruled competent after getting treatment in a secure psychiatric facility, and ultimately they were convicted of numerous charges, including assault and resisting arrest. They served time in prison, but never offered any information on Victoria's disappearance.

Victoria's case remains unsolved and is still under investigation.
