Here is a challenge for all of us.

Date Found: June 20, 1984

Female, 20-35 years of age. Located on the south bank of the Spokane River, .08 miles west of the TJ Meenach Bridge.

Characteristics and Circumstances:

The woman was dismembered; her height is estimated at 5'3"-5'7". Her hair may have been blond. Her skull was found later (4/19/1998) in a vacant lot at 7th and Sherman ST in Spokane. Dentals and DNA are available for comparison.

It is likely the woman gave birth to one or more children-She had two prominent moles located on her neck, she had a 1 1/2 oval horizontal scar on her left knee, a faint 1/4 inch scar on her right knee and a 3 1/2 inch scar on her left arm.

I have seen two forensic reconstruction of her that I will try to locate in a link.

This lady has waited a long, long time to come home-let's see what we can do!

I'm assuming this is the same UID? Her age is a wider range there. They also mention she had a spina Bifida occulta in the sacrum at the S1 segment as well as a few other spinal conditions.

It also mentioned that a hand that was not hers was recovered. Does that mean it was located at the same site?

I found this too. Amazing when you start scouring the internet and find different 'listings' you get different info.

The hand, good question.

Sounds like there's someone out there playing a sick and twisted easter egg game. Torso with partial limbs found - then the skull recovered about 14 years later. I wouldn't be surprised if there is yet another limb or 2 recovered in the next few years.

The hand that was not hers, was not found in the same exact area. It was just found about a month later so at first they thought it would be hers. Thats what I understand of it.

The body is still missing both hands from the wrist and the lower legs from mid calf level. So she may have had tattoo's in those areas.

Thankfully there are dentals for her.

Thank you for the clarification EmilyE. Do you know if they found who matched the found hand?

Nope, I don't know, sorry. But I do know we have had at least 2 seperate dismemberers around Washington State. In the "without a Trace" series our newspaper did, they list all the known serial killers and times they operated. If I remember right neither were caught or known.

You can get to that pdf file through the newspaper site and series.

Scroll down a bit to the graphics/maps title.
By the way this newspaper listing of missing and unidentified is the best listing for our state in my opinion from 2002 back.

Heres a link to the serial killer pdf in case you can't find it

I went through every single listing on the PI missing person website and did not find much. I did compile a list of women matching the UID's height, weight, and age description within a year or so of the time she was found. All the missing women I found were from King County (Seattle area) and went missing in 1983. None the less it may be helpful to list them:

I'm not sure of the UID's hair and eye color so this list is rather broad.

I did a quick search in DoeNetwork- these are all women who went missing around that time period (82-84). Some of them had already had children, or I think probably had time to have child before June 84. I can't figure out exactly what this UID woman is supposed to have looked like since the two reconstructions are very different so I thought I'd put all these links up and see what people think. I did go through and take out the least probable matches (ie people with tattoos, etc).
There isn't much to go on so its kind of a long list sorry.

Do we know for sure that this young lady was pregnant? The Doe Network vitals mention that she could have been as young as sixteen so the stretch marks on her could be from puberty. I know I had visible stretching on me well into my late teens/ early twenties from the growth spurts I experienced at ten or eleven years old. Losing weight can also cause stretch marks (I'm assuming with her thin stature it wasn't from gaining weight).

Is there any other indications she was pregnant at some point?

I had a heart to heart with the ME whose pet case this is-she is certain that Jane Doe gave birth to at least one if not more than one child. Pelvic changes etc...support her findings. Maybe there was an episiotomy scar??? I will ask her.

This is what I found on the net, since I was unfamiliar with how having this might impact your ability to carry a child:
http://www.spinabifidaassociation.org/site/c.liKWL7PLLrF/b.3571337/k.9A4C/Pregnancy_in_SB.htm

"Ability to become pregnant and maintain pregnancy
Although the ability to become pregnant is not significantly changed by having Spina Bifida, the ability to maintain the pregnancy to term can be impacted by the level of lesion, amount of previous abdominal and pelvic surgery, and structure of the genital tracts.
Because some women with Spina Bifida have structural changes in their uterus (womb), it is helpful to have an examination by a obstetrician/gynecologist (possibly with ultrasound) to make sure the uterus can support a pregnancy. During this evaluation the:

  • bladder,
  • kidneys,
  • ureters,
  • pelvic size,
  • lower body flexibility, and
  • shunt tubing
can also be evaluated.

During pregnancy
During pregnancy, women with Spina Bifida can have unique medical concerns. Many women with Spina Bifida develop frequent urinary tract infections, and may be encouraged to monitor their urine at home using urine dipsticks to look for infection cells and bacteria.
As the baby develops, it can press down on the bladder, out on the spine and spinal cord, up on the lungs, and out on the ureters, urinary diversion tracts, and bowel and cecostomy tracts. There have been reports of:

  • worsening scoliosis (curvature of the spine),
  • decreased bladder function,
  • urine trapping and reflux into the kidneys,
  • difficulty catherizing Mitrofanoffs and other continent diversion tracts, and
  • prolapse (outpouching) of tracts though stomas.
Pressure on the peritoneal shunt tubing can affect drainage of hydrocephalus. The increased weight of the baby can cause pressure sores, balance and mobility issues. All of these issues can be managed with the assistance of your high-risk obstetrician and adult Spina Bifida specialists."

Thanks, Believe. That's exactly the type of evidence I was hoping they had to prove that she was pregnant. That might narrow down the list a bit.

You are welcome-you would love this ME-she is crazed about UID's in general, but this one really, really got to her. She gives talks to LE including FBI...good stuff. Very smart, very funny.

I don't think that pregnancy info would necessarily apply to this woman. She had spina bifida occulta, which is the least serious version of spina bifida. Occulta means 'hidden', a lot of people with that version never even know they have it- my sister just found out she had it a few months ago after getting an Xray after a car accident.

In general it does not cause health problems except back problems related to the spine/vertebrae malformation. The more commonly known kind is the cystica kind where babies are born with a hole along their back with some of the spine showing, sometimes there is a cyst that covers or damages part of the spine also. That type is what causes those serious issues related to pregnancy I'd guess, I don't think you get that stuff with spina bifida occulta though.

ETA_ I dont' know what the 'unfused apophyses' thing means though, so she might have had a more serious type of occulta? I wonder if that is part of spina bifida or a back issue that she got because she had spina bifida? Or unrelated? not sure really...

Believe- do you think maybe you could ask the ME about this womans spina bifida next time you speak with her? I think it might be good to know (if possible) if this was something that would have been noticeable when she was alive or if we don't need to really take it into account when trying to search for matches?

You got it-I will ask about the spina bifida and the signs of pregnancy-birth.
