Former TU Player Dies After Shooting

posted 9:58 pm Fri September 05, 2008 - Tulsa

Police are still looking for a man who walked into Sweeney's business Thursday and shot him in the head. Sweeny died of his injuries Friday morning at the age 64.

Friday family said they couldn't think of anyone who wanted to harm Neal Sweeney. For them the list of friends is much longer than the list of possible enemies. For many Neal Sweeney is remembered as a TU football standout,a hall of famer, and a fixture at golden hurricane games.

The suspect is described as a black-man, between 18-and-20 years old. He's about 5-10 with a slender build, a medium complexion and no facial hair. The suspect was wearing a dark hoodie, blue jeans, and white tennis shoes.

During a news conference, Tulsa Police say they have arrested 23-year-old Terrico Bethel in connection with Sweeney's murder.

Back in February, Tulsa Police found an abandoned van matching the description of the getaway car on the day of the shooting.

Tulsa Police say this case took them to another state and through many twists and turns, but finally, after nine months, they say they have arrested the killer.

Detectives are not saying much about how they got to Bethel or his motive at this time.

At the press conference, TPD announced it was definitely a hit and the motive was the sale of gasoline through his company. This is still an ongoing investigation and further arrests are expected.

The van was stolen two days before the hit from Muskogee, OK.

Four other men were part of the plot. Fred Shields and Alonzo Johnson were sentenced to two consecutive life terms, Allen Shields committed suicide before going on trial, and triggerman Terrico Bethel was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility for parole.

Aziz, the mastermind behind it all, took a plea deal.
