A SKULL believed to be of a young child has been washed up on Sydney's northern beaches.
A member of the public found the skull on Mona Vale beach at around 6.45am (AEST) on Friday morning and notified police.
Examinations by an anthropologist, pathologist and a dentist suggested the skull belonged to a young child of between four and five.

--this is so sad, my mind is busy thinking what child this could be.

lord have mercy...

Stories like this blow me away--I hope they figure out who this child because it is a reported missing child, not some child who was disposed of by their family and then not reported! :(

It was radiocarbon dated as 700 years old.

Photo of the skull at link.

Investigators enlisted the help of anthropologists at New Zealand's University of Waikato, who used radiocarbon dating to conclude the skull was about 700 years old.

The experts concluded the skull belonged to a child between four and six years old, who was not Indigenous.

Northern Beaches detectives say the skull probably belongs to a private collector, a museum or a research facility.

I think it's the well preserved condition, from what I can judge by the photo. I suspect it might be more damaged if it had been in the bottom of the ocean for 700 years.
