A newborn baby girl died after she was thrown from her car seat during an apparent street race that ended in a crash in Phoenix, police said.

The 6-week-old infant died Monday night, according to MyFOXPhoenix.com.

The 24-year-old unidentified driver of the Ford Mustang that was carrying the child was listed in critical condition.

Police believe the man behind the wheel was racing another vehicle with the baby girl strapped in her car seat in the back when he lost control and crashed into a utility pole in the western part of the city.

The alleged joy ride ended in tragedy: The child was ejected from the Mustang and died from her injuries.

There was no immediate word as to whether charges would be filed.
 
OMG how sad. Was the seat not installed correctly or was she not fastened in? I can not even imagine doing something so stupid with a child in the car, much less an infant or newborn!

what's really sad, besides the horror of a childs death, is this person is not a blood relative, just a 'friend'.

Poor little girl. I can't even imagine how her mother must be coping.

This person is just a friend! Why (and not blaming mom for the baby dying) would the mother let an irresponsible person drive her baby girl around. When my daughter was a baby and even toddler and older, I was extremely hesitant about her being in the car with people unless I knew them and knew that they had my daughter's safety first. Very sad all the way around!
 
The driver of the vehicle's name is Chance Reed. The baby's name is Katie.

Katie's great-aunt is mega PO'd and said the child's mom knew that Reed had a bad driving record.

This is so, so awful.

Katie Ann Fujimotto's mom is so mad at her family. Her Myspace is private but she's got it written right out there "F*ck her family and Katie Ann didn't need a family like that. Don't worry mommy will love you forever".

Looking at Reed's Myspace I'd say they are more than casual friends. That's so dang sad. All he way around.
