Mass. boy dies after accidentallly shooting himself with Uzi

I personally feel that anyone under 14 shouldn't be attending this event. This is a horrible horrible story, and it could have been avoided by keeping this boy home! What are these parents thinking, exposing this boy to shooting objects for "fun"?
I learned never to downplay the seriousness of guns, and shooting at pumpkins and propane tanks just undermines all of the work of good innocent people who want to keep their children and homes safe. Shame on them.
 
What a heinous story-and whose bright idea was it again to let him do it?
 
What in the world was he doing with an Uzi to begin with? If it was to teach firearm safety and target practice, they surely didn't need an Uzi for that! Absolutely ridiculous.
 
I don't understand how a father could let his 8 year old son fire an Uzi. What is wrong with today's overly-permissive parents? I don't like weapons in the first place, but this child shouldn't have even been at a gun show like this.

I am still trying to wrap my mind around that, Cali. I have an 8-year-old son. A bb gun, even a bow and arrow - sure. An uzi???? WTF!!
 
An uzi basically is a small gun that shoots small rounds much like a 22-caliber. I am sure it was semi-automatic. Whoever let him shoot it figured it was small and light. :furious: Stupid.

As I said before, I think he's too young to be at this event. If you want to teach a young man firearms safety and responsibility, this isn't the place to do it. Shame on them!
 
I have to agree guys, there was no need for a boy this age to be there. I have an 8 year old son and can't even imagine him handling a gun in this manner.
If you want to teach them firearm safety (which is a whole other debate), do it with an old school bb gun for crying out loud.
 
As one of the resident gun nuts, I can tell you that my kids do not even have toy guns, as I consider any sort of play involving weapons to be 100% inappropriate in any context. They are not toys. There is no reason I can see why an 8 year old would be allowed to handle an Uzi, as they are no good for target practice or anything really.

Thank you! I applaud your clarity and vision on this topic. Guns are never to be treated as toys, and I don't ever agree with the kids thinking it's cool to just "blow stuff up".
Target practice should be practiced with targets. Not pumpkins and propane tanks!
 
Most Uzis are 9x19mm Parabellum, and from the article I'd say it was full auto and climbed during firing because an 8 year old is not strong enough to keep it pointed in the right direction with those forces. Anyone involved in putting that weapon into that boy's hands is responsible for his death.

I have to agree with you, . Placing this particular weapon in this child's hands was wrong on every possible level. Especially if he was "assisted" by a certified gun specialist. That person should have known better since he knew what this weapon could do. What were any of these adults thinking???
 
I used to have a crazy boyfriend many years ago that had an UZI and I remember that as a 120 lb female I had difficulty with it. I cannot imagine what the person must feel like that let him shoot it. I hope they are charged for this and it hits the national news so the other idiots out there thinking of doing something like this think twice.

oops I stand corrected- it's like a 9mm. Why do you think they had fully automatic weapons at this show?
 
I shot one up in Pennsylvania once, and it looked small, like a Tek-9. Although I think it is a handful to shoot, I think a bigger, longer rifle like a crappy rattlebox AK or an SKS would be harder for them to shoot. I wonder if it had some kind of a pistol grip and the kid thought he was "cool" or something.

Interesting on the full auto thing. I didn't know that. I live in the strictest state, btw= NY.

I respect your opinion. I have friends who think the same way, and whenever we have their kids over I respect their wishes. My son was never really into "weapons"-he's just not the gung-ho,g.i.joe type of kid, but he has had light sabers in the past,lol.
Anyways, I was very surprised when I saw the kids playing with "guns" and swords in the back yard. Would have had to remove every finger from their hands, and every stick in the yard to make sure they would never play with "weapons" while in my care:blushing:
It always amazes me what kids will do when they think the grown-ups aren't looking.
 
I understand LE has to follow the book when it comes to charging people, But...SERIOUSLY?!?! Ugh, I will be so beyond mad if no one is charged.
 
The dad was an ER doctor for a hospital in CT i heard on the news last night. and he said his son was a budding outdoorsman. I think it's a tragedy and while I personally don't enjoy guns, I'm not against people having them who are responsible.

I have no idea what having an Uzi has to do with being outdoorsy.

The Dad being a Doc, I believe he is head of emergency medicine, is shocking to me. Anyone who works in trauma, scratch that, anyone who has any basic COMMON SENSE, knows the dangers of guns and kids! I am NOT anti-gun, I've done target shooting, and I am not against guns in homes where they are properly controlled. This is just so wrong, the father is responsible in this, IMO.
