Local Cold Cases Similar to Caylee Anthony

Striking similarities between two unsolved Broward murders and the Caylee Anthony case stir painful memories

Dougherty was 5-years old in 1994 and lived in North Lauderdale. Magliulo was 3-years-old in 1987 and lived in Pompano Beach.

Both were adorable little girls who disappeared right under their parents' noses, and were later found dead in remote areas.
Lamberti said just as in the Caylee Anthony case, investigators focused on Julie's parents and Amanda's parents as suspects, but were never able to bring charges against them.
It's a shame how many parents can murder their own children and never be brought to justice for that murder. Even more of a shame when those children's bodies are never found.

I'm surprised they found out the cause of death due to the postmortem interval. How did they know she had been asphyxiated? Did they find the ligature or murder weapon by the body, or did they just assume asphyxiation was the most likely cause of death because they didn't find any signs of physical violence?

Most likely her hyoid bone in the neck was broken.

"The hyoid is the U-shaped bone of the neck that is fractured in one-third of all homicides by strangulation. . On this basis, postmortem detection of hyoid fracture is relevant to the diagnosis of strangulation."

Here the medical examiner talks about the remains. Said he ruled out shooting or stabbing because there was no damage to the bones. Doubted she drowned, and "suspected" she was asphyxiated. Goes on to say there are many ways to kill a small child that are undetectable.

Makes me wonder about some of the really old disappearances or murder of children back in the 50's, 60's and before. Back then it was less common for police and or the public to focus on the parents.

Sadly, thanks to so many publicized and tragic cases now, many of us have come to suspect the parents first.

Of course, often they are completely innocent. It's just sad how our "conditioning" has cahnged over the years.

A suspect has been known for a number of years but not enough evidence has been found to link him to both of these cases. However he is currently in prison for child rape of similar nature.
As someone who lives in the area, many people have felt over the years that the police only considered someone in the family as the killer to the determent of the case. Its just a shame that the justice may never come because of this. http://articles.sun-sentinel.com/2000-11-29/news/0011290321_1_deputies-detectives-girl

Welcome, Djvyvyan! I've posted the article in Amanda's thread. Thank you!

It has been 31 years since this little girl was found murdered. It only takes one piece of evidence to change everything.

Someone ALWAYS knows .....

This poor little one...... does the forehead missing on the skull indicate injury? Maybe just deterioration of the skull. I see where the assumption is strangulation but it sure makes one wonder.

Remains of a toddler found buried in the Everglades...

The men found the skull in a brushy area between the city and the Everglades when looking for some rocks to jam under the tires of their truck, which had gotten stuck in the mud.

'I walked over to see what it was,' Mike Fletcher, 25, said. 'I didn't know what I had in my hand until I turned it around and saw the teeth. The top part of the forehead was missing. I went blank. I don't know if I set the skull down or dropped it.'

He said the rest of the bones were in a heap on top of a rotting white towel.

'They weren't in any kind of uniform order,' Fletcher said. 'They were all on top of that old material under the bones. It had rotted. The kid must have been rolled up in the towel or something. All the bones were piled on top of each other. The skull was sitting right on top of them.'

One would think $25,000 would convince someone talk.....

Lacking much physical evidence, a suspect or solid theories, investigators essentially are starting from scratch.

"We're just looking for new leads," said FBI spokeswoman Judy Orihuela.

On Tuesday, the FBI announced a $25,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest and conviction in the case.

Anyone with information may contact investigators at 1-800-CALL-FBI (1-800-225-5324).
