In southern Brown County, a group of hunters makes a startling discovery when they stumble across what are believed to be human remains, partially buried in a shallow grave in a wooded, marshy area.

It was around 3:30pm Wednesday when, according to Brown County Sheriff Dennis Kocken, the hunters came upon the remains. "We found a skull and what appears to be, maybe one other bone," Kocken told reporters gathered near the crime scene Wednesday night.

Authorities, because they don't know what happened, are investigating the case as a homicide.

The remains were found near a swampy, desolate, rural area near county highways NN and Z, along the Brown/Manitowoc County borders in the Town of Morrison.

The gun season for deer always begins the Sat. before Thanksgiving there. That's why so many people (hundreds of thousands, literally) are out in the woods and find bodies.

Crime scene specialists from the State Crime Lab in Wausau removed human skeletal remains Thursday from a shallow grave in a remote and thickly wooded marsh in southeastern Brown County.

Brown County Sheriff's Capt. Jeff Sanborn said investigators consider the case a homicide, though it's too early to tell the age or gender of the body or how the person died.

"We did recover the skeletal remains of a human and a lot of it was still frozen in dirt," Sanborn said.

A group of hunters working through the swamp on the north side of County Z on Wednesday came upon a human skull sticking partially out of the ground. They called the sheriff's department about 3:30 p.m.

Sanborn said the hunters did everything right.

"They marked the spot, called immediately, didn't contaminate the scene — they did everything perfectly," he said.

Finding Body Raises Hope of Closing Missing-Person Case

The investigation after the discovery of human remains in southern Brown County will now move to Madison.

Hunters found a skeleton partially buried in a field just off county highways Z and NN in the Town of Morrison earlier this week.

We're told on Monday the remains will be transported to the State Crime Lab for examination.

Investigators hope the discovery will bring closure to some family. There are several high-profile cases of people missing in Northeast Wisconsin for more than five years.

There are Yvone Rickman and Areerat Chuprevich missing from Brown County, Cheryl Spaeth missing from Manitowoc County, Carol Jean Pierce from Door County, and Laurie Depies from Winnebago County.

Steve Woefel of Calumet County and Beulah Ware of Brown County have both been missing four years. Todd Yopek of Brown County disappeared in 2006......

According to search warrant documents filed since her disappearance, Areerat Chuprevich was chatting with her sister online on April 26, 2003, when she abruptly stopped using the computer. Chuprevich's sister called Chuprevich at home a short time later, but she did not answer the phone...

The man authorities identified as the prime suspect in her disappearance – 41-year-old Karl McLeod – hanged himself in May 15, 2006 while an inmate at the secure Wisconsin Resource Center where he was serving a 10-year prison for an unrelated beating case...

Investigators know that McLeod spent time at Chuprevich's house and used her computer, Zakowski said.
