What role will forensics play?

It's the beginning of the healing process. But the work is far from over.
Now it's time to prepare for the trial, processing all the clues from the dirt in the woods.

Casey's murder trial will hold fascinating forensic details; the minutiae that's being sifted through.

We talked to ITT Criminal Justice Chair, Shelly Shaffer, about what is and isn't out there.

First, why toxicology reports will yield nothing:

“Any kind of drug or any kind of substance that perhaps Caylee was given would go into the flesh and the lungs or into the organs,” says Shaffer. ”We don't have any of that flesh, no organs. We just have pure skeletal remains. Just bones.”

And about those bones, that's where the mystery lies.

Baez said his client still maintains she is innocent.
"You really do not know half of this story. You don't," Baez said. "And you will find out in court."

"The Anthony family did not give up hope that Caylee was still alive until we were notified by the Orange County Sheriff's Office at approximately 1:30 today," Conway said. "They now know that their precious granddaughter is safe and hope that she will serve as the angel that protects thousands of missing children and their families."

He said the family wants the same answers as law enforcement and pledged to make themselves available to investigators.

Defending Caylee's mom a challenge, experts say

Prosecutors don't need to show what killed Caylee, Geragos said. The defense needs to overcome Casey Anthony's statements and behavior.
"Somebody is going to have to give an explanation at some point as to when she last saw the child, who she gave the child to," he said. "And until that is done, I don't care what they put together, it's not going to carry any weight."

Forensic experts: Bones, hair can unlock vital clues in Caylee Anthony case

'It is very challenging'

But experts said bones can reveal only so much. If a victim is beaten, stabbed or shot, bones likely would bear the evidence, they said. Chronic abuse and healed wounds also would show up. Toxic chemicals are another story. They aren't always obvious if organs and other soft tissue are no longer present. And trauma such as drowning and smothering would not be detectable from bones only, said Arni Masibay, an expert in forensic DNA.

Caylee's Death Ruled Homicide

Garavaglia said the remains were totally skeletonized, with no soft tissue present, but the DNA extracted by the FBI matched Caylee's profile.

"The manner of death, though, is an opinion based on available information, including examination of the body, information from the scene, as well as circumstantial evidence," Garavaglia said. "Based on all of this, the manner of death in this case is homicide. The cause of death will be listed as homicide by undetermined means. Should other pertinent information become available, the cause of death could be revisited."

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. -- Investigators have cleared the scene where Caylee Anthony's remains were found more than a week ago.

Detectives finished their search of the area late Saturday afternoon. "No Trespassing" signs have been posted and a camera is watching over the property, which is less than a half a mile from the home of her grandparents, George and Cindy Anthony.

Also Saturday, detectives served a search warrant on the Anthonys' home.

Investigators search Anthony home with warrant

The case's lead investigators and crime-scene technicians stayed inside George and Cindy Anthony's Hopespring Drive house for about an hour and 45 minutes before emerging with two large boxes and two bags. Orange County sheriff's Capt. Angelo Nieves would not identify what items were removed from the home, but said that "items of evidentiary value were found."

George and Cindy Anthony were at home when investigators arrived with the warrant, and a visibly upset George Anthony could be seen as they made their way inside.

"It's never a good time for anyone who's lost a granddaughter -- obviously we're going to treat them with respect," Nieves said. "But, we have an investigation to conduct."
