O'Fallon Man Believes Remains Found in Pike County are His Mother's

KSDK -- Remains were found in Pike County of a person missing since 1992 and a St. Charles man is confident they are those of his mother.

Sheriff Jim Wells said that the remains were found Sunday by a hired excavator on a property in the southeast portion of the county. The sheriff said that the remains are those of an adult, but did not say yet if it was a male or female. The sheriff said that a family member of the deceased person was being interviewed.

Matt Higginbotham of O'Fallon, Missouri believes the remains are his mother, Betty Ann Howery. She disappeared in 1992.

A preliminary hearing date has been set for July 28 for a Springfield man that prosecutor say killed his wife 17 years ago then stuffed her body in septic tank 17 years ago in Pike County.

Douglas Howery Sr. was arrested on May 7th at his Hillcrest Avenue home and charged with first-degree murder in the death of Betty Ann Howery, who was 44 when she disappeared from the couple’s rural Annada farm in February 1992. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Douglas Howery, 60, was found guilty of first-degree murder in the 1992 disappearance and death of his wife, Betty Ann Howery, 44, of St. Charles...

Police believed Howery was the last person to see his wife alive. Howery was having an affair with a woman who was pregnant at the time of his wife’s death. Howery later married the woman and moved to Springfield...

Because prosecutors did not seek the death penalty, Audrain County Circuit Judge Keith Sutherland has no discretion in sentencing and will give Howery life in prison without parole on Feb. 4, Crocco said.
