Deputy's action under scrutiny in Casey Anthony case

An Orange County deputy who was criticized for the way he handled an August tip about Caylee Marie Anthony's remains was previously accused of failing to properly investigate incidents, a report released Tuesday shows.

Deputy Sheriff Richard C. was accused of failing to properly investigate a threatening telephone call in March 2007, but that allegation was deemed unfounded, the sheriff's report showed. The outcome of a similar complaint against him in December 2006 was not available Tuesday.

The Sheriff's Office is conducting an internal investigation into what happened in August after a meter reader reported something suspicious in woods near the home Caylee shared with her mother and grandparents.

Eyewitness News legal analyst Bill Sheaffer said that the actions of the detectives leads him to believe that the video may have been staged for Casey's defense team.

"What better location to go to than an abandoned house where someone by the name of Gonzalez used to live," said Sheaffer.

Another site that was searched by Dominic Casey in the video was a house (see map) less than one mile from the Anthonys' home (see map) and the area where Caylee Anthony's remains were found (see map | map showing all three locations).

Cain was hired by Orange County in 2006 and was assigned to patrol the area where Caylee's remains were found. An administrative review is under way to determine if Cain violated any policies when he went to wooded area to check on the tip, which was phoned in by Orange County utility worker Roy Kronk.

In a Tuesday interview on "Good Morning America," Kronk said Cain was "kind of rude."

The head of the forensic science department at a Canadian university is the newest member to join Casey Anthony's defense team.

Forensic anthropologist Scott Fairgrieve, chair of Forensic Science at Laurentian University in Ontario, will be helping attorney Jose Baez's team as an expert consultant in the search, recovery and analysis of human skeletal remains.

"My role in the case is basically peer review," Fairgrieve told the Orlando Sentinel. "I will be reviewing reports on the evidence. So far everything I've done has been remotely.

"We're the ones that actually initiated the investigation. Mr. kronk, through conversation, got to us that he had concerns that some things have transpired and we, ourselves, felt there was a need to look into this," Padilla said.

It was that same spot where Caylee's remains were found a few months later.

The sheriff's office is expected to release his personnel file Wednesday afternoon.

WFTV reporter Kathi Belich talked to a family member from another murder mystery 20 years ago who said psychic Ginette Lucas took her money and gave her useless information in return.

Lucas said she was the one directing the Anthonys' private investigator, DC, on the phone in November, but the man who shot the video said Mr. Casey never mentioned a psychic and was secretive about his numerous phone calls.

Meanwhile, the Orlando Sentinel learned that Kronk owes about $10,000 in back child support to his ex-wife in Maryland. The two divorced in 1991, and she began seeking payment since 1996, according to court records. Their son is now 25.

Maybe his son's mother will finally get her child support. Unbelievable!!!!!

The network said it did not pay Kronk for his interview, but it acknowledged it paid Kronk to "license" a photo. A photo that aired during the interview showed a snake.

Kronk's lawyer and an ABC spokeswoman would not disclose what Kronk was paid for the photo.

Evans said it is not uncommon for national networks to pay $10,000 to $20,000 for photos.

Evans said he knew that his client owed child support but did not know why Kronk had not paid it or whether he was going to use this money to pay off the debt.

"Ultimately, it will be up to him," Evans said. "He's working to find a way to [pay] it."
