MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — A man has been charged with throwing his 4-year-old daughter to her death from a traffic bridge above a river in Australia's second-largest city, officials said.

It is so hard to understand these actions. And really hard not to feel hate for the man when thinking of the fear this little girl must have felt.

Just to be Clear she is ALIVE

THE man held over the West Gate Bridge plunge asked security guards to take his children before being arrested.

A four-year-old girl was pulled from the water by police close to the pumping station at Spotswood about 9.30am today after apparently being thrown from the bridge.

Despite reports that she had died, the Royal Children's Hospital insists she remains alive but is in a critical condition.

A 35-year-old Hawthorn man was arrested after security staff at the Commonwealth Law Courts on the corner of Williams and La Trobe Streets noticed him standing in the foyer with two children.

Security staff noticed that the man was shaking and staring with wild eyes. One described the man as catatonic.

He was clearly distressed and crying, witnesses said. He was in the foyer for 30 minutes while staff offered him drinks in an effort to calm him down.

One onlooker said the man "looked like he had had enough".

Police were called and several officers arrested the man, who offered no resistance.
Just before he was taken away, he asked security guards to look after his children.

At the time of his arrest, police had no indication that the man was connected to the West Gate Bridge incident.

I wonder if he read about this guy

A four-year-old girl allegedly thrown from Melbourne's West Gate Bridge has died.

A Royal Children's Hospital spokeswoman said the girl died at 1.35pm (AEDT) today.

Police say a 36-year-old Hawthorn man has been charged with murder and will face the Melbourne Magistrates' Court later today.

The girl was rescued from the Yarra River this morning after she was allegedly thrown over the West Gate Bridge.

Water police reached the injured girl in the Yarra River within 10 minutes of the fall.

She was treated by paramedics before being airlifted to the Royal Children's Hospital in a critical condition, but later died.

So sad. My prayers are with her mother and brothers.

Don't think that nationality should be a part of the title either, Jane. Though to be honest, I didn't realize this occurred in Australia. My focus goes right to the child. There have been a number of these bridge cases...mothers and fathers.
Couldn't tell you where the bridges were, only that the children died.

Yeah I have no idea why the media do that

They could put Father IN Australia throws child off bridge or Father throws child off bridge in Australia etc etc

That was sweet of you to change it

I saw this on BBC this morning and was deeply saddened :( just tragic.

A father allegedly threw his four-year-old daughter off a bridge in front of the girl's two young brothers and scores of motorists during rush hour in Melbourne today.
Witnesses said Arthur Phillip Freeman, 35, suddenly stopped his family car – which also had his two young sons inside – and, with young Darcey Iris in his arms, walked to the side of the West Gate Bridge, just after 9 a.m.
He then allegedly dropped his young daughter over the railing and into the water, 190 feet below.
Shocked drivers who witnessed the incident – which police say occurred in a matter of seconds – immediately called emergency hotlines as Freeman reportedly got back in the large white family Land Cruiser, and drove away.

As he was being led away, Freeman reportedly begged court staff to "take care of my kids.''

I'll bet his little boys were 'wild eyed' too, after watching dear old dad throw their sister off the bridge.

There has to be more to this story. It sounds as if the guy just snapped.

God bless the surviving kids and the little angel that died. I will be praying for the family. As for the dad, I hope that he gets the maximum sentence.

From what I can tell, this guy was in the middle of custody litigation. He was known to be devoted to his children but neighbors said he was under extreme pressure. They did not elaborate. Interesting that he drove back to family court after the murder. The child seemed limp when he took her out of the car, according to on-lookers. People at the courthouse thought he seemed out of it. What the hell? I'm sorry, but there is always a choice. If a person feels they cannot take it, or are losing touch with reality, they need to step back and get professional help. A custody battle in which he may have fought to keep his children should not have led to the irrevocable loss of one of them. What a tragedy. Poor little girl.

Justice Paul Coghlan today sentenced Arthur Phillip Freeman to life with a non-parole period of 32 years...

During a 40-minute statement that had finished moments earlier, Justice Coghlan said Freeman had not shown remorse or even begun to understand the enormity of his brutal crime. “You are yet to say sorry for what you have done," he said. “Your attitude to these matters remain self-centred. I regard your prospects of rehabilitation as bleak”...

Freeman, 37, was last month found guilty of murder despite pleading not guilty on the grounds of mental impairment.
