and he should be jailed like a murderer. It was premeditated , he lit a fire that would cause destruction . He knows what fires do - THEY KILL even if they DONT Kill people some of the time they KILL Wildlife in the bush and Our Nature

Arsonists are lower than LOW - a very cowardly thing to do. At least when someone shoots someone looking them in their eyes they are seen for who they are

A former Victorian Country Fire Authority (CFA) volunteer has been sentenced to 17 years and nine months in jail for killing 10 people by deliberately lighting a bushfire on Black Saturday.

Brendan Sokaluk, 42, was found guilty of 10 counts of arson causing death in the Victorian Supreme Court for deliberately lighting the Churchill fire on February 7, 2009.

He will serve a non-parole period of 14 years.

Brothers David and Colin Gibson, both experienced firefighters, died some time around 6.15pm while defending their parents' home in Hazelwood South. They, like others, were caught as a result of the wind change.

Annette Leatham died running from a stricken vehicle back to her daughter's Callignee home.

Alfred and Scott Frendo, a father and son, died in Callignee about 6.50pm while trying to escape the flames; Alfred in his Toyota Hilux and Scott near his own vehicle.

Martin Schultz died with his dog in his vehicle in a Callignee creek bed. He was trying to drive to safety.

Husband and wife Alan and Miros Jacobs, their son Luke and his friend Nathan Charles perished some time around 7pm in a concrete workshop under their Koornalla house.

They all died of asphyxiation.
