The Putnam County Sheriff's Office said investigators assume Haleigh Cummings was abducted because house-to-house searches of the neighborhood Wednesday found no evidence that she wandered away.

Missing 5-year-old Florida girl likely was abducted, police say

The search for Haleigh Cummings turned more desperate Wednesday after officials said someone likely abducted the 5-year-old from her bedroom in rural Putnam County.
Bowling said 44 sex offenders live in a 5-mile radius of Cummings' home, but most have been contacted by law enforcement since Haleigh disappeared. Many sought out authorities on their own.
"Right now, we don't have a lot of clues indicating where she's at," Detective John Merchant said. "I'm always positive, though. We want to find her alive."

Hardy said both Cummings and Croslin have taken polygraph tests, but would not say if they passed. When FOX 35 asked if they tested their vehicles for evidence, he could not comment saying it was part of the investigation. He also said they have collected evidence, but could not say what items were taken.
Miller says he plans to fly in 9 members of Equusearch from other parts of the country. He has around 200 members in Orlando. "Today's going to be a big mapping day. Planning day and then it appears tomorrow is when the big serach is going to start, but it's important. We try to do something to get her home alive," Miller said.
Scattered rain in Satsuma isn't making it any easier. The Equusearch group said the weather will slow them down but they do not consider it an inconvenience because they are trying to find a little girl.
Miller says he will need volunteers to help search on Friday. However, he hasn't determined where everyone will meet yet.

Haleigh Cummings mother, her parents and other family members sat outside the subdivision where deputies said the 5-year-old was snatched from her father's home. They're handing out fliers and asking questions. They even have questions about the father and his girlfriend's story.
The girlfriend, Misty Croslin, told deputies she went to the bathroom for a few minutes, and when she returned, Haleigh was gone.

Community Pitches In To Find Putnam Co. Girl
George Anthony Reaches Out To Missing Girl's Family
POSTED: 12:49 pm EST February 12, 2009
UPDATED: 6:21 pm EST February 12, 2009
<snipped>
George Anthony reached out to the family of a missing Putnam County girl Thursday. He brought buttons to the family and said he understood the pain of those close to 5-year-old Haleigh Cummings.
Haleigh's mother, Crystal Sheffield, said she strongly believes that whoever abducted Haleigh knew her. "If somebody went in there and just grabbed her, they’d have to know her. Haleigh’s not going to just wander off and let some stranger pick her up without making a noise," Sheffield said. Grady said Haleigh’s father's live-in girlfriend, Misty Croslin, who reported Haleigh missing, took a polygraph exam but he would not comment on the results.

I've been to the site, I've looked all over, but I don't see what they are talking about. Didn't see any place or anything to vote on.

aksleuth
This is why you couldn't find where to vote! The voting closed January 18th, 2009. I voted way back & can't even get to where I left my message to be in the Citizen Brief Book! Tricia must not know that the voting closed on this already. It had many other topics to vote on & to post your message & none of them are there any longer so they all have closed too!

Wrapping up the Citizen’s Briefing Book
Friday, January 16, 2009 06:29pm / Posted by Dan McSwain

Every day, the President receives books filled with facts and recommendations to be considered while crafting and enacting policies.
The Citizen’s Briefing Book—a project that has enabled everyday Americans to share their expertise and insight with President Obama—has been a tremendous success so far.
Michael Strautmanis, Director of Public Liaison and Intergovernmental Affairs for the Transition, was particularly impressed by the enthusiastic response the feature has elicited.
“We have had an unbelievable response—over 70,000 people participated, half a million votes, and tens of thousands of wonderful ideas,” Strautmanis said.
The Citizen’s Briefing Book will be open for ideas, comments, and voting until Sunday at 6pm. President Obama will later receive the Citizen’s Briefing Book: a unique compilation of the ideas and feedback submitted completely by the Change.gov community.

We’re eager to carry this community’s enthusiasm forward in the coming months and years. We invite all Americans to join the new administration online at WhiteHouse.gov after President-elect Obama is sworn in.

*NOTE:
I could be wrong but I can't get back to where my comments are! When I'm more awake later I'll search some more to see if I can find it in case I'm wrong!

SATSUMA, Fla. - Putnam County Sheriff's Deputies are on day four of searching for Haleigh Cummings. For the first time, deputies are getting help from a private search team. Texas based Equusearch gathered 200 volunteers and headed out around 9:30 a.m. Friday.

Equusearch President Tim Miller plans to focus on the wooded area behind Haleigh's home. He could not say exactly where they would be searching because it is under investigation. He said because Haleigh has been gone for 4 days, the chances of finding her alive were not good. Still, he remains optimistic and has a feeling she's still alive.
Searchers headed out on horses, ATV's and bicycles. Volunteer Jim Bailey doesn't know Haleigh's family, but felt a need to help search. "Just out of my heart I feel sorry for the family. It's a warm feeling to help," Bailey said.
He came prepared with a hiking stick and other equipment. "This stick I have is good for searching, scratching the ground and keeping animals away," he added.

Officials Reinterview Family Members Of Missing Girl
Search Area Expanded; Volunteers Help Authorities
POSTED: Friday, February 13, 2009
UPDATED: 12:56 pm EST February 13, 2009

Hardy said the girl's family members will be interviewed again, but refused to say exactly who.
The girl's parents are divorced and the she was being watched by the father's 17-year-old girlfriend, Misty Croslin, when she vanished from the father's home. Hardy refused to comment on the family members authorities have talked to or whether their stories were consistent.
The sheriff said investigators have looked into more than 350 leads, but have not made any arrests. "The world is a suspect," the sheriff said.
Several dozen sex offenders and predators living in the area have all been interviewed and their homes checked, Hardy said.
Dominick Pape, special agent in charge of the Jacksonville office of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, said forensic evidence collected during the investigation such as DNA and fingerprints would be a priority.

More than 50 law enforcement officials and members of Texas EquuSearch joined forces Friday in the search.

At a 4 p.m. press conference Friday, Hardy said they are continuing to conduct searches by air and they have sent divers into the St. Johns River.

Search for Haleigh Cummings puts tiny Satsuma in spotlight
Helen Eckinger and Sarah Lundy | Sentinel Staff Writers

The father's 17-year-old girlfriend, Misty Croslin, told sheriff's investigators that she was sharing a bed with Haleigh when the little girl disappeared.
Marie Griffis, Haleigh's maternal grandmother, said Croslin has given conflicting accounts of that night to media outlets. Sheriff's officials said they are sticking with their original interview with Croslin and would not comment further on the discrepancies.

The Orlando Sentinel could not reach Croslin on Friday, and Haleigh's father, Ronald Cummings, declined several requests for comment, though they have denied any involvement during televised interviews.
Several residents said that drug use is common.
"There ain't much else to do around here," said 20-year-old Matthew Ross, who runs the local barber shop with his brother.

Amber Alert: New Clues Bring New Hope In Haleigh Search

<snipped>
SATSUMA -- A news conference is scheduled for 4 p.m. Saturday for an update on Day 5 of the search for missing 5-year-old Haleigh Cummings.
Investigators said they will go back over some areas already covered to make sure they did not miss anything.
"We are actually in the middle of doing a staffing, to basically learn from the searchers, and that will gauge our course of conduct for [Saturday], to see what type of investigation we're going to be doing based on what was found [Friday], based on the tips and the leads that we have," said Putnam County Sheriff Jeff Hardy.

Saturday search for Haleigh off to slow, soggy start

(8:30 a.m.) The search continued Saturday morning for missing 5-year-old Haleigh Cummings despite the scattered rains that began overnight.
The steady rain began overnight and tapered off to a steady drizzle by about 7 a.m. Saturday with temperatures in the low to mid-70s.
Law enforcement personnel resumed their search while family members maintained their vigil in respective tents.
Because of the rain, volunteer searchers, including EquuSearch, had not yet begun searching as planned as of about 8 a.m.

They have not only talked to neighbors but in some cases have gotten permission to search property. And they are working with state officials who have firsthand experience with such cases, such as the Florida Department of Law Enforcement's Child Abduction Response Team - known as CART.
"Our people here have either worked on missing child cases or are part of our CART team, which has been out here and which Putnam County initiated on the front end," said FDLE Special Agent Dominick D. Pape. "If they have not worked on a case, they have at least had lots of training in this to assist the sheriff."
Where they can, they've gone into residences, including getting permission from owners of vacant buildings to search the premises.
And officers have indicated they've been trying to check not only the whereabouts but the homes of 44 registered sex offenders living on both sides of the St. Johns River near Haleigh's home.

Optimism and setbacks in search for Haleigh

Ryan said law officers have gone to the Cummings home many times and will continue to do so to make sure they have not missed anything.
Ryan did not discuss the details of the investigation or any polygraphs administered. However, he said, "Everybody is a person of interest. We're continuing the interviews. We're talking to everybody."

The underwater search in the St. Johns River planned for today will not take place, although air and foot searches will continue.
"After tomorrow, we will sit down and evaluate all the areas of search throughout the week and make a determination as to whether we need to continue to expand or if we're satisfied with the area that we've taken a look at thoroughly," Ryan said.

Griffis said Ronald Jr. is holding up well and is aware that his sister is missing. She said she hoped the family could all get together for "Junior's" birthday today. He is turning 4. "We have to do it for Haleigh," she said.

A familiar face joined in the search for Haleigh on Thursday. George Anthony, the grandfather of slain toddler Caylee Anthony, showed up at the command post to offer help and support.
"At times I think the most success we could ever hope for right now is to find her little body," said Tim Miller of EquuSearch. "So that there's some closure and law enforcement will have another area to search."
A news conference to update the public on the status of the case will be held Sunday at 4 p.m.

Amber Alert -- Haleigh Search Draws 500 Leads
Sunday, February 15, 2009 4:35:18 PM

<snipped>
At a 4 p.m. news conference Sunday, Putnam County deputies said nothing of significance was found on the sixth day of the investigation. Chief Deputy Rick Ryan said he was confident investigators left no stone unturned in the search area near Haleigh's home. Ryan said the search team has about two more areas to investigate Monday before concluding the ground search.
Officials said several people have inquired about Chad Reynolds, a sexual predator who disappeared from Marion County. Ryan said although Reynolds has ties to Putnam County, investigators do not believe he is connected to Haleigh’s disappearance.

Ryan said that other than a couple of select areas, they were suspending the search and focusing more on the investigation, which was the reason the command center was moved from a trailer in Satsuma to county offices in Palatka, where more telephones and better Internet access would help the investigators processing more than 500 leads that have come in.
