Metro Woman Missing For Nearly 30 Years
Rita Rinehart Hasn't Been Seen Since April 1980

POSTED: 5:04 pm CST January 30, 2009
UPDATED: 6:39 pm CST January 30, 2009

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Charges of child abuse and murder against Danial Rinehart have made headlines in Cass County this month.

A case involving another Rinehart named Rita is less known, but has been going on for nearly three decades.

Rita Rinehart has been missing for almost 29 years.

One relative told KMBC's Peggy Breit that the two Rinehart families aren't related, but another relative said they might be.

Either way, investigators said Rita Rinehart's case deserves attention. The mother of two girls was 32 in April 1980 when she suddenly vanished.

Rita Rinehart worked at the Folger's coffee plant in downtown Kansas City. She had moved to Raymore to get away from her husband, David Rinehart, who had been charged with raping Rita's 8-year-old daughter.

David Rinehart ultimately spent five years in prison.

Rita Rinehart was supposed to testify in the case. She had said she was afraid of her husband and that he had once held a gun to her head.

A month after Rita was last seen in Kansas City, David Rinehart's brother found Rita's pickup at a truck stop at Interstate 70 and Highway 7.

Police said Rita was fond of talking on CB radios with truck drivers. Her call sign was Wild Woman.

Investigators said Rita's pickup appeared to have been towed to the truck stop, and a line going to the transmission had been cut.

Foul play is suspected.

Rita's two daughters were later adopted by relatives.

David Rinehart still lives in the area.

Anyone with information in the case can call the Crime Stoppers TIPS hot line at 816-474-TIPS.

Do you all think this could be her? JD's face looks alot like her. I know my sisters nose changed some because of her wearing glasses, the bridge was made more narrow over the years. I'm going to put Rita on the Unidentified's thread (mainly to do a side by side)and see what happens! Wonder if there was any relatives living in Kentucky, anybody know?

The victim was discovered on July 22, 2005 in Shively, Jefferson County, Kentucky
Estimated Date of Death: 2 - 15 years
Cause of Death: Homicide
partial Skeletal Remains

Vital Statistics

Estimated age: 20-40 years old
Approximate Height and Weight: 5'2"-5'4".
Distinguishing Characteristics: Three small hairs found near the body lead officials to believe she had straight brown hair, but that might only have been a root color. Distinctive, narrow nose.
Dentals: Available
DNA: Available in FBI NMPDD

Case History
The victim was located as a construction company was clearing a lot in the 3600 Block of Seventh Street Road in Shively, Kentucky on July 22, 2005. The lot once had an old ice-cream supply house and then a junkyard that has since been cleared.
Detectives said a year of research and tips from the scene led to the conclusion that her death was a homicide. Her body was purposely laid in a way to be hidden and her hands and body position indicate foul play.

My biggest problem with this match would be the height difference. It seems rather substantial, although skeletal remains are usually just estimates.
Rita's height at 5'9" might put her out of the range of possibilities for LE to consider.

Sadly another one of those everybody know is responsible cases...

Her car was towed to 707 truck stop in Blue Springs may 1st 1980.
Where was it towed from? And who towed it? Who's the Brother-in-law?

Rita is still missing under mysterious circumstances. She was due to testify against her Ex husband for abuse of her 8yr old daughter.

This is the case Rita was supposed to testify in.

Poor woman was surely murdered by someone paid by her husband, an abusive guy with her and her own daughter.
wherever you are Rita rest in peace

That only got 5 years in prison for assaulting that little girl, he (allegedly) killed that little girl's mother, and she had to testify in court against him without her mom being there. Its Despicable he only got 5YEARS! And he probably got out early for good behavior.I think this case deserves a lot more Justice.
The brother-in-law who found Rita's truck lived 1mile from that 707 gas station, at the time of her disappearance.
Namus #5310 is a unidentified woman who was found in 1981. I believe this Jane Doe is Rita. One Characteristic of Rita's is that she has a deformed right hand. The Jane doe was found with her hands removed. I know the heights don't match up but I think their is still a possibility Jane is Rita.
