Vanished Records in Teen Girl's Disappearance Clouds Prospects of Hope

Advocates fear the case of a teenage girl who vanished from the Salem area more than twenty five years ago may fall completely into obscurity.

The case of Kerry Lynelle Johnson is especially troubling because the police records on her case are missing. Nobody seems to know exactly what happened.

Kerry was 17-years old when she disappeared. She was last seen in Salem Oregon in 1982. It would appear she has family in the area, or did at that time, as she was trying to reach the home of her cousin. We are hoping that someone can offer information that can help reestablish the case.

Police say Kerry Johnson was last seen hitchhiking to her cousin's residence in Salem, Oregon on September 14th 1982 and that she never arrived at the residence. It is reported that she may have been sighted in San Jose, California sometime after her disappearance.

How sad. If that file was still around she might not be missing still.

Reading this has made me so angry and sad. How in the world could the police lose her file. Either they were sloppy or there was a cover up. What saddens me more then that is the fact they can't find any family. This whole situation is sad.

To me, this is unacceptable! This was a living, breathing person who had a whole life ahead of her...

The readership for Salem-News.com per their site: 77% of Oregon, 12% US outside of OR, 11% International. The Oregon.gov website doesn't even make mention that her file was lost.

The way they've handled righting this wrong seems like an 'oh well' in my opinion. Wouldn't you think the PD owes it to this girl to do a whole lot more to raise awareness! They should be posting articles on news sites and in newspapers across the country, and frequently to increase the likelihood they cast a wide net to request the public's help in reconstructing what was lost due to their screw up of losing the file. They should also be broadcasting it across all media orgs on TV and the department should be investigated to ensure this does not become common place and the FBI should be on the case right now. Sorry for yelling - this is just horrible!

I wonder if anyone in that police department really tried to look for Kerry's family. Maybe they didn't try hard enough. I'm thinking they just want everyone off their backs, so they said they did. Let's face it, her remains could be sitting in storage right now and no one knows she's there. It's like she didn't exist at all. She deserves to be treated better then this.:banghead:

Can someone check the California Marriage Index (it's subscription based so you need a subscription to Ancestry)? Just to make sure she didn't arrive in CA and later married not knowing that she is still missing? Just an outside chance. Fingers crossed here.

State of Remains: Not recognizable - Partial skeletal parts only.

From Doe Network, Hot Case 2079

Would possibly be hard to make a match with what was found but it does seem like the route from Reno to San Jose...

Kerry has haunted me for many years.... It was thought she might have been a victim of the green river killer... So her case file was sent to PD in Seattle... They say they never got it... And Salem said they sent it... Somewhere it was lost... I did a lot of research on Kerry years ago... She has family in Washington state... In my research I also thought she may have been a victim to the same killer as Sherri Eyerly....

Kerry's NCMEC poster has a new photo of her!

[h=3]Details of Disappearance[/h] Kerry left her Salem, Oregon home in 1982 and hitchhiked to Reno, Nevada to visit a relative. After that, she left her relative's home to visit a friend in San Jose, California. She was alone, on foot, and possibly carrying a large blue suitcase.

On September 14, Kerry called a family member to say she was going back to Nevada and then would return home to Salem from there. She said she would arrive in Salem by October 1. She never made it home, however, and never contacted her family again.

Kerry's disappearance remains unsolved and the circumstances are unclear. Oregon police are investigating.

I wanted to bump this idea from years ago.... Seems like a very real possibility for Kerry. Is there anything else that could be done to compare Kerry to these remains as technology has now improved?
