    17 March 09

Easton police are trying to locate a man who has been missing since he left home Saturday morning.

Richard VanWhy, 73, of 439 W. St. Joseph St. went out around 11:30 a.m. on Saturday but didn't tell his family where he was headed. According to police and his granddaughter, VanWhy suffers from diabetes and dementia and hasn't had any medication since Saturday.

VanWhy is white with gray, thinning hair, hazel eyes, and is possibly wearing a green jacket, baseball cap and jeans. He wears glasses and walks hunched over a cane.

Anyone who may have seen him is asked to call 610-330-2200.

On March 14, the 73-year-old VanWhy left his home at 439 W. St. Joseph St. without telling anyone where he was headed. Eleven days of searching haven't brought him home, so now his family is offering a $2,000 reward for information that leads to his return.

The only sign of VanWhy was a cane discovered in the Lehigh River last week. Police have searched the river nearly every day since, according to Easton police Lt. Scott Casterline. The state police also conducted an aerial search. The family, meanwhile, has taken the search online, posting a request for information about VanWhy on Facebook.

VanWhy is white with gray, thinning hair, hazel eyes, and is possibly wearing a green jacket, baseball cap, glasses and jeans. Although pictures of him provided by the family show him with a beard, he was last seen clean shaven. Casterline said anyone with information can call 610-250-6656.

On March 14 my husband, Richard VanWhy, left our home on South Side in Easton and has not been seen since.

As you can imagine, this has been a difficult and distressing time for me and my family. However, this experience has been made bearable only because of the love and support of family, friends and our community. That is the silver lining of a terrible situation.

I would like to mention a few very special individuals and organizations: Jim and Rachelle Supelveda, Easton Police Department Detectives Miller and Alonzo, The Express-Times, The Morning Call, WFMZ, Laini Abraham, and Krystie Ebner and many, many more.

We still do not know where he is. But I thank everyone for their prayers and support; they have made all the difference.

Tonia--This is from the comments section from the link you posted:

" 'The family of Richard VanWhy, a 74-year-old Easton man who has been missing for about the past month, tells 69 News it was his body that was recovered from the Lehigh River this morning. Members of the Easton's police and fire deparments pulled him from the river shortly after 9:30. The coroner has not yet determined how he died.'

"Just picked that up off of WFMZ-TV 69 News online."

    So sad for his family.
