NM - Grants, HispFem, 17-20, killed in residence, 1974

    1974 killing a mystery

GRANTS — The case of a woman killed 35 years ago in Grants is right out of the “Cold Case” TV show, where law enforcement and forensics investigators try to solve crimes committed years, sometimes decades earlier.

An Hispanic woman, described as being between 17-20 years old, 5 feet 2 inches and 110 pounds, was killed at 800 Melvin St., Grants police have recently confirmed.

The victim had brown shoulder length hair on top, brown eyes, about 4 inches of blonde on the ends of the hair and was petite in stature, according to a police description.

Grants Police learned of the incident from a witness on March 2 and informed the Independent Tuesday, at the scene of the crime at 7:30 p.m.

GRANTS — Police have a new ally in the search to identify a murder victim from 35 years ago.

Porchlight International Missing and Unidentified, an international missing person search organization, has now undertaken the quest to help find out who the victim was.

Ellen Leach of Gulfport, Miss., a Porchlight member, contacted the Independent after she found the article last week about Grants Police learning of the killing from a witness who decided to come forward after 3 1/2 decades.

Leach has taken the artist’s sketch of the woman and has contacted the 903 registered members of Porchlight, who are searching databases with the sketch and the physical information given to police by the witness.

The woman was killed at 800 Melvin St. in the summer of 1974.

I see no indication here or in the other forums that this UID case was ever resolved. But she is not listed in DoeNet or in NamUs.

    Here's the facial reconstruction.

There still isn't a NamUs page for this Jane Doe.

The link to this story is now bad, but I just forwarded contents of the article to Melissa Gregory.

She says she will follow up with the New Mexico Office of the Medical Examiner to get a UP casefile created for this Jane Doe.

That hairstyle would probably have looked something like this when she curled, combed, and styled it: Julie Christie in Shampoo, 1975

The two-tone ends are unusual for the time, though. Dark roots with bleached hair, or streaks, yeah, but not usually the ends. I think I remember seeing it once in a while but couldn't find a picture with it.
