    WA - Sean Hillman, 5, Seattle, 5 July 2008

Seattle father fights for 5-year-old son abducted by mother to Japan

July 5 marked the end of a few great weeks for Carl Hillman.

After a grinding 18 months, Hillman was divorced and on vacation with son Sean. For two weeks, he relaxed with the 5-year-old, who was excited to start at the John Stanford International School's Japanese-English immersion program. The biracial boy had friends on both side of the language divide.

Hillman dropped Sean off that evening at the home of his ex-wife, Mayumi Ogawa, expecting to see him in a few weeks after a trip to his mother's native Japan.

Thirty-six weeks have passed since Hillman last saw his son and, despite court orders and felony charges filed this month against Ogawa, he's unsure if he ever will see him again.

    [snip]

Hillman last heard from his son in mid-July, when Sean left a strange message on his grandparents' answering machine. In a move unusual for the 5-year-old, Sean called his grandmother by her first name.

"He basically said he missed everyone in Seattle, but that he was going away and wouldn't be able to see anyone for a while," Hillman said. "I knew he was being coached."

Days later, Hillman received a threatening e-mail from a Japanese attorney retained by Ogawa, claiming he'd face stalking charges if he attempted to contact his son.

    [snip]

Since his son's abduction, Hillman has been trying to hold it together. In a measured tone, he allowed that it has taken a toll on him.

"I've tried everything -- acupuncture, traditional stuff, counseling," Hillman said. "I've got a personal trainer now and that's the best thing.

"It makes me tired enough to sleep well about three times a week."
Walking in Seattle, he's sometimes confronted by Sean's old friends and their parents.

The kids, he said, often ask if Sean is with him, and he tells them no. But, despite the long odds, he continues to hope he'll someday get to say yes.

Much, much, MUCH more at link: http://www.seattlepi.com/local/40409...ml?source=mypi

They also mention that ""No child has legally or diplomatically returned to the United States from Japan." - - Scary thought.

He's adorable! Poor Sean - to be taken from his daddy and grandparents like that. Some people are so selfish. If mom need to return to Japan so that she had her family's support, she could have worked out visiting arrangements. As hard as this distance is, she could have worked it out.

    Children are not pawns!

Stuff like this makes me so mad. The mother is not only hurting the dad, she is hurting the child. She's too dang selfish to think about that. I pray that this father gets to see his son again and soon.

Official page for Sean by his father, Carl. http://seanhillman.weebly.com/

    Charley Project. http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/h/hillman_sean.html

And a VERY interesting piece from the European NCMEC chapter. Here are a few snips from http://www.ncmec.eu/case.php?Id=20&lang=en

"This case has an interesting twist in that the father writes on the web that he himself pressured the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (USA) to distribute posters of his "missing" son after it had already been established exactly where his son resides in Tokyo. We are not amused by the fact that the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (USA) still felt the need to misrepresent the extent of their knowledge in the resulting missing child poster."

    AND

    From Carl Hillman
"As long as Sean is held illegally in Japan and I am denied unrestricted access as was laid out prior to and after the abduction.... he is missing as far as anyone is concerned. His whereabouts are currently known and I have been able to force some visitation but that comes at a very high emotional and monetary cost. I am interested in what you are attempting to do besides discredit emotionally distraught parents. "

This is not the true NCMEC site based in Europe. It's a site set up by a parental kidnapper.

The real Europe-based missing site is this: http://www.icmec.org/missingkids/ser...licHomeServlet

I know several parents who've asked the kidnapper with that website to remove their kids. Of course it never happens. So nice. /sarcasm.

Thanks for the info, forthelost! Not sure how I missed that one, since you can't even look up missing kids, just the "fraud" cases. That is just sick and sad that someone would do that.

Prayers for Sean, and any other child being kept from seeing another caring parent. Whether they are "missing" or not.

Well, you can't expect class and dignity from a guy who's abducted his kid.

edit: link from my site to Sean's case below:

That entire site is driving me crazy ..... I have never been so frustrated. I struggle with how this idiot can continue to do this.
I have been really digging into international abduction cases these past few months, Japan in particular, and the thought of someone saying a child is not missing because they are known to be with their abducted parent in a foreign country is infuriating.
I will say though, that despite having a LONG way left to go in understanding and creating systems and laws to better rectify international kidnappings, people are starting to become more aware of what a horrible and unacceptable reality is of these cases.
Awareness is the beginning to changing everything!

Japan finally signed the Hague Treaty back in May. I hope this will enable them to bring Sean home soon.

Such a sad case stealing children and fleeing to a different country isn't beneficial to the situation, and more importantly, isolates the child!
Whilst being on Websleuths makes me more aware of what evil there is in the world, it also reminds me that the best people are among us as well.

    Love you all!
