Adams County District Attorney Shawn Wagner said Friday the autopsy concluded 19-year-old sophomore Emily Rachel Silverstein was still alive when she was stabbed.

Wagner says the examination showed she was stabbed repeatedly with a knife blade nearly 5 inches long.

Poor girl, I'm trying to find a picture of her.

Dermody visited the Silverstein family yesterday and described their grief as unfathomably deep.

"There was no way to talk to the parents. There was nothing to say. The grief was just too tremendous, too overwhelming. She was crying, the wife, from a depth I had not known existed. You couldn't console. You couldn't say anything."

Authorities said Kevin R. Schaeffer, also a Gettysburg College student, choked Ms. Silverstein, 19, a sophomore from Roosevelt, N.J., early Thursday morning and then stabbed her in the neck with a steak knife. He sat with her for 15 minutes before putting her in a bathtub, according to a police affidavit.

Mr. Schaeffer, 21, of Oley, Berks County, confessed to the crime, according to the affidavit. He told police he had been drinking that evening but was not intoxicated. He said he had recently stopped taking Zoloft, an anti-depressant, the affidavit said.

Schaeffer, a 23-year-old Berks County native, pleaded guilty to murdering the then 19-year-old Silverstein, of Roosevelt, N.J., inside his apartment...

Schaeffer was sentenced, per a plea agreement with the Adams County District Attorney’s Office, to 26- and a-half to 53 years in state prison on charges of third-degree murder, possessing an instrument of crime with intent to use, tampering with evidence, possessing marijuana with intent to sell and possessing drug paraphernalia...

During preliminary proceedings, Wagner said Schaeffer’s legal team raised a mental health defense and Schaeffer did have a prior history of illness which would have likely come up at trial.
