Seventeen years ago today, Sheila Astuccio reported her husband, Joseph K. Astuccio, missing from their home at 24 Rubbly Road, in Wenham. He had last been seen the day before, April 1, 1992, at Brown’s Square in Ipswich, collecting rent from tenants at buildings he owned.

The case has been considered cold for several years, but the Wenham Police Department has received two leads within the last month and is stepping up the search for Astuccio and what may have become of him.

and

Through modern technology and new missing person databases, the department has learned Astuccio may have worked at a bakery in Peabody in the mid-1990s, and another lead reveals that he may have lived in Holiday, Fla. The bakery owner, who Walsh did not want to identify, is searching the personnel records to determine whether Astuccio may have been employed.

and

Complicating the case is that Astuccio went by several aliases before he disappeared, including Gioseppi Astuccio, Joseph M. Astuccio, Kevin Astuccio and Kevin J. Astuccio.

One week after Astuccio disappeared, police received word of a possible sighting of him at Logan Airport, boarding a Continental Airlines flight to Orlando, Fla. The airline did not have a record of Astuccio flying that day.
“But somebody could’ve seen him at the airport, standing next to the terminal … getting ready to go on another flight somewhere,” Walsh said.

On April 20, 1992, Astuccio’s 1987 Cadillac Roadster was found near the landfill in Middleton, with broken windows and a damaged ignition.

Astuccio’s hat, coat and appointment book were the only items left in the car, Walsh said. After dusting the vehicle for fingerprints, none but Astuccio’s were found.

Fascinating.....the article dosn't give any hints as to why he may have been living under an assumed name at all.

His last name appears mostly in Mass. I found a few in NC and FL.

Where did he come up with the name Gioseppi. I only found one listing with that first name attached to a different last name.

Wonder if he was involved with the "mob"?

Very fascinating case I too wonder if he could have been involved in the mob or some other affiliation that would prompt him to go missing voluntarily. With that many aliases there has to be a reason. My thought would be that maybe he was running from someone and trying to distance them from his wife and family.

We live in the house that he built in 1984 and was living in when he disappeared. We have learned a lot about him since we moved here in 2019. Some rumors, some facts. Overall I am obviously intrigued by his story. I hope there is some resolution someday.

Do you think he was murdered or chose to leave on his own accord?

Details of Disappearance

Astuccio was last seen at Brown Square in Ipswich, Massachusetts at 9:30 a.m. on April 1, 1992. He owned business and residential properties there and planned to collect rent from two tenants that day. His 1987 Cadillac Roadster, which was blue with a white roof and the license plate number 993-KVZ, disappeared with him. A photo of the car is posted with this case summary.

It was found abandoned near a landfill in Middleton, Massachusetts on April 20. The windows were broken, the ignition had been damaged, the tires were covered with mud, and the only items in the car were Astuccio's appointment book and his coat and hat.

In February 1992, Astuccio went to the police to report someone had fired a .22 caliber bullet into the front doorframe of his home. He was at home at 11:00 p.m. when the shot was fired. He went to bed afterwards and reported it the next day. The shooter has never been identified and it's unclear whether the incident was related to Astuccio's disappearance months later.

There was a possible sighting of Astuccio a week after he disappeared; someone who knew him thought they'd seen him at Logan Airport, boarding a plane bound for Orlando, Florida. The airport had no record of him flying out that day, however.

Astuccio may have worked at a bakery in Peabody, Massachusetts in the mid-1990s, and he may also have lived in Holiday, Florida for a time. None of this information has been confirmed. Astuccio did own rental property in Florida at the time of his disappearance.

Astuccio resided with his wife in the 20 block of Rubbly Road in Wenham, Massachusetts at the time of his disappearance, and Wenham police are investigating. He was a self-made property manager and apparently quite wealthy. He had no major debts and nobody was in significant debt to him. His case remains unsolved.

Investigating Agency

  • Wenham Police Department 978-468-4000

Circumstances of Disappearance

<<On April Fools' Day in 1992, Joseph Astuccio left his home on Rubbly Road in his 1987 Cadillac Roadster. Astuccio, a self-employed property manager for properties in Ipswich, Rowley and Merrimack, went to Ipswich, where his office was located. He was last seen in Brown Square in Ipswich. He was trying to collect rent from two individuals. Astuccio owned rental property in Massachusetts and Florida. He never came home that night, and the following day his wife reported him missing.

An employee at the former Middleton landfill spotted Astuccio's blue Cadillac, the windows smashed and ignition damaged, on April 20, almost three weeks after he disappeared. His hat, coat and an appointment book were the only items left behind. After dusting the vehicle for fingerprints, none but Astuccio's were found. On February 11, 1992, Astuccio had reported to police that someone had shot at his home the night before. Police recovered a bullet lodged in the home's door frame.>>
