VA - Amy West, 37, & children Maximus West, 6, & Jack West, 1, Reston, 8 April 2009
Mother and Two Young Children Missing, Maybe in Danger
6-year-old Maximus and 1-year-old Jack, along with their mother, 37-year-old Amy Beth West, were last seen on Wednesday morning. Now all three have been designated "endangered missing persons" by police.
West failed to show up for a court-ordered meeting to turn the kids over to their father, scheduled on Wednesday night. A concerned family member called police to check on West.
Police found West's car parked at her house on Esplanade Drive in Reston and her purse, cellphone and credit cards inside.
Police say West may have a gun she bought recently from a relative. Family say she suffers from a mental illness, and police say that she does not have her medication with her.
So far, police say they have found no signs of a struggle or hints that the family was abducted.
Neighbors say the family seemed happy and are shocked by their disappearance.
Amy West is approximately 5 feet 4 inches and 145 pounds. All three family members have brown hair and brown eyes.

A warrant has been issued for a missing Reston woman last seen with her children April 8. The warrant charges Amy Beth West, 37, with parental abduction...West takes medications for a mental disorder and may not have them with her. It is also possible she may be armed with a handgun..."Three things in human life are important: The first is to be kind; the second is to be kind; and the third is to be kind." ~ Henry James

Family, Friends: Mother Did Not Abduct Kids
After the disappearance of a woman and her two children, family and friends of the missing woman are in disagreement with the police about whether the mother left willingly or was taken from the family's Reston home. In the parking lot of Amy West's apartment building, her car was parked with her purse, containing her cell phone and credits cards, inside. Family members point out that it seems unlikely she would leave without those things. They believe Amy could be in trouble as well as the children.
Family members and friends say the picture painted by police does not reflect who West is. They pointed out that her two boys are her life. West's friend Bryan Rupert said she is "very proud of her children," and added, "I don't think she would ever intend to hurt her children."
What information the police have to lead them to their conclusions remains unclear, but it has prompted police to charge West in her absence with a felony count of parental abduction.

Vigil Held for Missing Reston Family
The friends and family of a missing Fairfax county woman say police have it all wrong.
They held a vigil outside her Reston apartment, saying she is a good mother who would never harm her children and they fear she may not have left on her own.
Amy West and her two children disappeared last week. Fairfax County Police are calling them endangered. They say West is on medication for a 'mental disorder' and she may have a handgun.
But family members say she is a Pentagon contractor with high security clearances. That she takes a mild anxiety medication for post traumatic stress disorder after being in the Pentagon on 9-11. They have no idea where the reports come from that she may have a handgun.
They say West is involved in a custody dispute, and vanished a day after losing custody of her younger child. She left behind her cell phone, credit cards and car.
