Unidentified White / Hispanic Male
  • Located on October 17, 1997 in Mt. Veeder, Napa County, California
  • Cause of death was self inflicted gunshot wound to the head
  • Estimated Date of Death: late 1980 or early 1981

Vital Statistics

  • Estimated age: late 20s to early 40s
  • Approximate Height and Weight: 5'6" - 5'11"
  • Distinguishing Characteristics: Possibly brown hair. Thin to medium build.
  • Clothing: Clothing found at the scene included Levi jeans with Burgundy pockets, a multicolored vest, a blue sweatshirt, a navy blue “Ralph Lauren Polo” brand pull over shirt (size-medium), New Balance running shoes size 11, fibers that are consistent (with the likelihood) that he was wearing a burgundy polyester vest and aviator style gold rim sunglasses.
  • Personal Effects: A hand-made heavy leather backpack, unknown manufacturer, filled with personal items, which was in pretty good shape considering the time lapse and the weather. The other personal items were untraceable.
  • Other: Budweiser beer cans. that particular brand of Bud didn’t come out on the grocery shelves until after 1980. A Ruger Bearcat .22 cal. revolver. The gun was traced to the Phoenix, Arizona area. It was rusted shut and the serial number was messed up.
  • AKA: Law Enforcement calls him "The MT Veeder Man"
  • Dentals: He had gold fillings in six of his teeth. This extensive, expensive dental work.

  • This type of dental work makes them believe the man was affluent or in the military. No lower jaw was recovered but dental charts are available on the upper teeth.
    [*]DNA: Available
Case History
The skeletal remains of this victim were located in a remote area in Napa County, California.
A skull with a bullet hole, a foot still inside a weather-beaten sock, and several other bones and fragments * were discovered by landowners who were surveying their property lines on Mount Veeder in 1997.
The bullet hole in the right temple of the skull, which was made by a .22-caliber Ruger handgun. Authorities are not sure if it was self inflicted or a homicide. He most likely was not a transient. The anthropologist determined the man may have been a horse rider after examining the configuration of the pelvic bones.

James Ezra Robinson
March 6, 1982 from Washoe Valley, Nevada.
Classification: Endangered Missing

Vital Statistics Date Of Birth: March 24, 1943
Age at Time of Disappearance: 38 years old
Height and Weight at Time of Disappearance: 6'1; 210 lbs
Distinguishing Characteristics: Brown hair; hazel eyes.
Circumstances of Disappearance
Robinson disappeared from Winters Creek Equestrial Ranch in Washoe Valley, Nevada in 1982 along with his wife, Nancy Robinson. The ranch was located on southbound US Highway 395 in Washoe Valley. The couple had been employed at the ranch for several months prior to their disappearances. Their disappearances were discovered during the morning of March 8. A construction worker who had been employed on the ranch arrived to find a broken window and blood on the front steps of the ranch's living quarters. Large pools of blood were discovered inside the Robinsons' residence, along with signs of a struggle. The Robinsons' truck was discovered abandoned with a flat tire on Highway 50, later in the day. Blood was found inside the vehicle as well. Tests conducted in 1982 were unable to determine the blood type.
The main house at the ranch burned down three months before the couple vanished. They disappeared right before they were scheduled to take polygraph tests to determine if they were involved. Arson is the suspected cause of the blaze. No one has been charged with the fire or the couple's disappearances.
There has not been any activity on Social Security numbers for either employment or tax filing on either of them.

My Note: Perhaps a murder-suicide situation? Ranch is only 120 miles from where UID was found.

I am with MBB on the good match!!! They look incredibly similar, have you submitted to LE yet?
Pearly

Thanks! I'll contact the authorities in NV and CA about a possible match.

I had a callback from Washoe Sheriffs Office, investigator took the information graciously and was interested in the gun that was found with the UID Male - so, perhaps they will give some feedback after they check this out.

Nancy Robinson (DOE Case 540DFNV) is also missing; I thought this was a possible for her, although much farther south from NV, there are some possible similarities.

It sounds like a good possible to me. Did you ever hear anything back from them, dearmont?

Namus link for the 1997 John Doe:
https://identifyus.org/cases/8634
No rule outs listed. He has nuclear DNA available as well as dentals.

He had hashish, Valium tablets, cans of Budweiser and Smirnoff vodka with him. The beer and the vodka were lotted to 1981. Assuming that's how they dated his death.

Namus link for the San Bernardino Jane Doe
https://identifyus.org/cases/2594
She has both nuclear and mitochondrial DNA and dentals are also available.

The Robinson couple is not in Namus.

His NamUs page narrows his age between 26 to 32. It also gives a little more information about the gun --
Ruger Bearcat .22 caliber revolver discovered under body. Gun traced to burglary in Arizona.
His height is above the estimate of the UID, but I wondered if he could possibly be Michael Costlow who went missing from Phoenix, Arizona on August 1, 1981. NamUs doesn't have a photo and he isn't listed on The Charley Project.

Harold William Melching deserted the Air Force on October 8, 1980 and was believed to have been suicidal at the time.

http://www.osi.andrews.af.mil/library/fugitives/melching.asp

The timing and height of both men is about the same, 68". The Doe Network also states this about the UID --

This type of dental work makes them believe the man was affluent or in the military.

The conflicting builds of the two men (Harold Melching is said to have a heavy build, while the Mt. Veeder Man is said to have a thin to medium build) might be a deal breaker, but if Mr. Melching was in hiding prior to committing suicide, he could have lost weight, I guess.

I'm only throwing this one out there due to location:
Robert Joseph Mailloux

This one could be worth looking into:

David Wardle
Missing since 1980/1981 from Wilberforce, Ontario, Canada
Classification: Missing

Vital Statistics

Date Of Birth: August 9, 1954
Age at Time of Disappearance: 27 years old
Height and Weight at Time of Disappearance: Over 6'0"
Distinguishing Characteristics: White male. Brown hair; brown eyes. Lean build. Wore thick eyeglasses. Usually wore a mustache, sometimes beard.
Marks, Scars: Unknown
Circumstances of Disappearance
David showed up at a family member's place one day, said he had gotten into trouble and she would not be seeing him for awhile until he got it all straightened out.

A week or so later she went to his house, he was gone, his truck was gone and his dog was out running around - he never went any where without his dog except work. That was in 1980 or 1981 and no one has seen him since.
A missing persons report was filed in 2010.

Slightly over a year ago, I suggested David Wardle as a possibility for another UID; he was eliminated as being that person because in his dental charts, he is missing front teeth on the top and bottom (I am not 100% sure which ones specifically). I don't really think David Wardle is Mt. Veeder man because his page on the Canada's Missing website says this about his teeth --

Stained , Had never seen a dentist. Teeth in poor condition - yellow - some missing at the front.
https://secure.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/missing-disparus/case-dossier.jsf?case=2012003299&id=11said

while Mt. Veeder man was supposed to have a lot of dental work that was either high end or military in origin.

i wonder if both have DNA on file
I have been told by Todd at NamUs that just having DNA on file isnt enough and that they need to be compared directly. Codis cant always compare weaker samples. That is apparently why NamUs took away the information regarding DNA as they had instances where a match was made but Codis hadnt caught it earlier until it was specifically compared.

To be honest, I don't think the gun being linked to the robbery has nothing to do with this UID. He probably bought the gun from someone for a much cheaper price and the UID wouldn't have to buy a gun license and have the transaction recorded, possibly to go "missing" without his wife/family knowing he committed suicide.

Just complete speculation on my end.
