Four masked men with rifles and handguns rushed into the northwest Albuquerque Denny's around 9:30 a.m. Saturday and demanded money. They fatally shot a teenage female employee. There were about 100 people in the restaurant at the time. Police believe the men committed 10 similar robberies in the Albuquerque area in the past year, but no one was shot in those incidents.

Two men were arrested within minutes, they are in their late 20s to early 30s and are from South America. They are still looking for more suspects.

10 similar robberies! A real crime spree, and now they have murdered.

Why did they have to murder the teenage girl? So sad.

It was a shock for neighbors to learn what happened inside.

Police said a group of masked men and possibly women armed with machine guns stormed into the restaurant shooting as they entered.

Police said they were after the money in the cash register.

Connie Mendez, another neighbor, said, "You are always thinking. You are always on guard."

One witness told police a man with a foreign accent slipped on the floor of the kitchen.

When a 19-year-old female employee made a comment about it, police said man shot her, killing her.

So she was murdered for saying something about one of the robbers slipping on the floor. Nice.

Here is another verson of what happened:

Witnesses told police that when a female employee attempted to run to the back of the restaurant she was gunned down.

Police were on the scene within minutes and managed to arrest one of the suspects at the restaurant and they tracked a second suspect to a trailer park where they apprehended him. Later in the day a tactical team surrounded a home where two more suspects were thought to be but a search of the home revealed the house to be empty.

Next a story about how the police found the guy in the trailer park.

This man gave one of the killers a ride to the trailer park....

"When he saw all of the stuff out there he said, 'No don't even pull in here.' I questioned him why," Martinez said.

Martinez claims that's when this stranger made a serious confession about something he and his friends had done this morning.

"I had asked him, 'Why don't you want to stop?' I said, 'Did you kill somebody?' He said, 'Yeah,'" Martinez said.

Martinez said he then dropped him off down the street and went back to the mobile home park to warn police. Martinez said he did learn a lesson from this and he'll never give a stranger another ride.

Could these people be gang members?

It just seems like they are moving in more and more places these days and are grouping up like militia groups do.

imo

Maybe the comment was about his accent ?

I thought the comment was about him sliding on the floor.. but who knows she could have just run away and they shot her. She didn't stand a chance against a machine gun.

If it was a gang... maybe MS13? They were from South America. In one article LE was trying to find out their real names through immigration, which makes me think they are most likely here illegally.

What a tragic and bizarre crime. This is a very busy time of day for Denny with the breakfast crowd. A hundred people that would include families. These robbers/murderers were true thugs. How threatening could a teenage waitress be whether she was running from fright or she made some comment? It sounds like they were trying to show muscle rather than trying to get serious cash.

I keep thinking that we are going to see more and more organized crime like this and other types here in the U.S. A small little town near me, Tahoka texas, has a city council woman school board member charged with organized crime along with her husband. Similar last names and owners of a game casino type store. I could be wrong, but I think the drug cartels have infiltrated everywhere from money laundering, corrupting city politics, mailing dope in the mail, selling it, home invasions, and violent robberies and kidnappings.

And how much money did these idiots think they were going to get from a Denny's restaurant - ummm.... divided by 4? And then to kill a teenager on top of it - lock 'em up and throw away the key!!!

I was thinking the same thing Poco. I could see this many suspects with this much force in a bank robbery or something, but Denny's?!

From December 2011:

Moments after U.S. District Judge William P. Johnson declared him legally competent, Salvadoran immigrant Pablo De Leon Ortiz, 34, admitted to the felony murder of a woman during a 2009 armed robbery at Denny’s and to the armed robbery of Lone Star Steakhouse and Saloon a week earlier.

Under a plea agreement with the U.S. Attorney’s Office, the felony murder of cook Stephanie Anderson carried a 30-year prison term and the armed robbery, five years, to be served consecutively, with deportation to follow...

Jose Melgar-Cabrera pleaded guilty to an accessory charge in September and was sentenced last week to four years in prison.

[Marvin] Aguilar-Lopez entered a guilty plea Sept. 30 to armed robbery of Denny’s and the felony murder of Anderson. His plea agreement calls for a 40-year prison term and deportation after that is completed.

A federal jury sitting in Albuquerque, N.M., today returned a guilty verdict against Francisco Melgar-Cabrera, 31, on Hobbs Act robbery and felony murder charges stemming from the armed robberies of two Albuquerque-area restaurants and murder of Stephanie Anderson in June 2009...

The long delay in bringing Melgar-Cabrera, a Salvadoran national, to trial was occasioned by his flight to El Salvador shortly after Ms. Anderson was murdered. He was arrested on Sept. 14, 2013, by Salvadoran law enforcement authorities, and was extradited to the United States...

Melgar-Cabrera has been in federal custody since he was extradited to the United States in May 2014 and remains detained pending a sentencing hearing, which has yet to be scheduled.
