Police search for 10-year-old McCleary girl
05:39 PM PDT on Saturday, June 27, 2009
<snipped>
Lindsey J. Baum was last seen at roughly 9:15 p.m. on Maple Street. She was walking home from a friend's house, and the distance she had to go was only about four blocks.

McCleary Police say she doesn’t have a history of running away, and since there are less than 2,000 people in town, someone would recognize her if she were walking the streets.

Small town baffled, alarmed at 10-year-old girl's disappearance

Her mother reported her missing at 10:50 p.m. And as the hours drag by with no sign of her, the girl's family fears she may have been taken by a stranger.

Search teams have been out looking for the girl, using bloodhounds. Sheriff's deputies, meanwhile, are calling people who live in the neighborhood and also are going door to door to see if anyone heard or saw anything.

Lindsey's mother admits the 10-year old had been fighting with her brother in the moments before she was last seen, and that Lindsey is still upset about her parent's recent divorce.

But with every passing hour, there are mounting worries that the friendly girl who will talk with anybody is in serious trouble.

FBI joins search for missing 10-year-old girl

Lindsey was last seen between 9 and 10 p.m. Friday when she left her friend's home on Maple Street, where she had been visiting, said Dave Pimentel of the Grays Harbor County Sheriff's Office.

Lindsey was going to walk the four blocks to her home on Mommsen Road, which is roughly a 10-minute walk. But something happened in that short distance - Lindsey never arrived home.

She says Lindsey argued with her brother on her way to a friend's house Friday night. She talked to her friend for a bit, then started for home as darkness fell.

The friend's father, Scott Williams, said he asked Lindsey to go home before it got too dark.

"She was here 10, 15 minutes, and then, you know, we said, 'You should probably get going before it gets dark,' and that was the last we heard of her," he said.

Witnesses say Lindsey seemed normal as she headed out around 9:15. Another friend even walked her part of the way, but Lindsey never showed up at her home.

FBI helping with case of missing McCleary girl

The McCleary girl was last seen Friday on Maple Street.

Michaela Campen is the last person known to have seen Lindsay. The girls were at Michaela's home around 9:30 Friday night, hoping Lindsay could sleep over.

"I told her you need to head home, it's getting dark soon, a half hour of light left. She put on her shoes and headed home," said Kara Campen.

Lindsay was alone for that nearly half-mile walk.

Officers have contacted nearby registered sex offenders, revealing no clues. Although there is no known evidence of a crime, the FBI has now joined multiple other agencies in the investigation.

Monday, June 29, 2009
<snipped>
Lindsey Baum was last seen walking home from a friend's house about six blocks from her own home in the small town of McCleary.

Grays Harbor Undersheriff Rick Scott says law enforcement officers were canvassing the city Sunday. He says search and rescue volunteers and others combed the area Saturday where the girl was last seen but "didn't yield anything."

Scott says there's no evidence of foul play, but his agency is "beginning to investigate with that possibility in mind."

Agents will be assisting Grays Harbor County authorities and scores of volunteers who hit the streets again Monday to look for the missing child.

Lindsey was last seen Friday night when she left a friend's house in the small town of McCleary, located on the coast southwest of Seattle, for what should have been a 10-minute walk. Bloodhounds failed to pick up any scent of the child along the route.

Lindsey was going to walk the four blocks to her home on Mommsen Road, which is roughly a 10-minute walk. But something happened in that short distance - Lindsey never arrived home.

A wide-ranging search was launched early Saturday in the town and the surrounding forests. The town was criss-crossed three times, but not a trace of Lindsey has been found. Even bloodhounds failed to pick up her scent.

"We searched all of the outlying area of the logging roads... and up the highway, and along the railroad tracks," said volunteer Stephanie Ross.

Pimentel said it's strange that nobody saw anything unusual.

Search for girl expands
Monday, June 29, 2009 1:42 PM PDT
<snipped>
Search dogs were being used this morning in marshy areas surrounding McCleary, and other areas that have been more difficult to traverse during the past two days of intense searching. A National Guard helicopter was to arrive this morning to search the area. And on Sunday, FBI agents were stopping literally every car coming in and out of town, hoping to find a lead.

Police want to talk to anyone going through town at that time. Even people who don’t think they saw anything might know something relevant and it might come out when trained interviewers talk to them, Scott said.

People should not assume their information is unimportant, or that someone else may already have told police the same thing, Scott said.

Earlier Sunday, search and rescue teams went door to door and created maps of areas the 10-year-old girl might have been hiding or somehow found herself injured.

Tami Koethe, a cashier at a neighborhood Shell Station, said local law enforcement reviewed video as part of the search.

Police say they need help from anyone who saw anything suspicious in or around McCleary Friday night.

"It's really important that individual realizes that they may be the one person who saw something, that to them was totally worthless, but to us is very important," said Scott.

Police urging someone to come forward is what Lindsey's mother asked for when she spoke with KING 5 News Sunday night.

Police have ruled out all family members as suspects.

Search ramps up for McCleary girl

Since investigators have not found any evidence to suggest what happened to Lindsey, they wanted to check her last known whereabouts thoroughly.

Instead of kids playing in Jim Mullin's creek, search dogs were back on his property. It's the sixth time his place has been searched.

Baum says she volunteered to take a polygraph late today. She wanted to clear herself, although police tell us she is not a suspect.

"I don't want people saying oh maybe the mom got mad at her and stashed her and now saying she ran away, I don't want anything like that," says Baum. "I want everyone to know my daughter is missing."

SEARCH FOR MISSING MCCLEARY GIRL CONTINUES
06/30/2009
<snipped>
An intensive search continues in the Grays Harbor County town of McCleary for a 10-year-old girl who disappeared Friday night while walking home from a friend's house. The mother of Lindsey Baum, Melissa Baum, fears her daughter was abducted. The sheriff's office says it has no evidence of a crime or that the girl ran away. Undersheriff Rick Scott says it's frustrating to have no clues. Dozens of searchers have been combing the area with the help of dogs and a helicopter. Lindsey is 4 foot-9, 80 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes, last seen wearing a light blue hooded pullover shirt and blue jeans. The girls father lives in Tennessee but he has had no recent contact with his daughter.

Mother Believes Missing Daughter Was Abducted

Investigators monitored Lindsey Baum’s MySpace page for any clues but said the account has been inactive since she vanished and she left no posts indicating she was planning to leave.

"There was nothing that indicated any preplanned intention for her to run away or go anywhere," said Grays Harbor County Undersheriff Rick Scott.

Searching the Wildcat Creeks on Monday, the Thurston County Sheriff's Office dive team didn’t find any signs of the missing girl. Other officers took the contents out of Dumpsters making sure nothing goes unsearched.

"With the time that's passed now, it doesn't look good," Scott said.

Searchers said the route Lindsey would have taken from her friend's home to her own home is short and direct. Police said the girl was unlikely to get lost.

Cadets from the Civil Air Patrol are also joining the growing search party for the girl, who disappeared while walking home on Friday. And police scoured surveillance videos from the town's businesses looking for any clues.

The mother believes her daughter would never have willingly gotten into a stranger's car.

"If somebody grabbed her she would have put up a fight," she said. "She would definitely scream."

"In my heart I know she's alive, but I need her home," she said.

And so does Lindsay Baum's dog, Cadence.

"Her dog is constantly needing attention. She knows something is not right," Melissa Baum said.

10-year-old Lindsey Baum's mother holds out hope that her daughter will be found safe as the search lingers into a fourth day. But even more reinforcements are being brought in to scour the area.

Search effort for missing McCleary girl doubling today

Undersheriff Rick Scott said ground search crews will focus on specific areas on the outskirts of town, such as brushy areas that children are known to frequent. It's possible a child could become tangled in heavy brush, he said.

In addition, the number of people searching Tuesday will double and a Washington State Patrol fixed-wing aircraft equipped with a FLIR will assist in the effort.

Since Friday, police and FBI agents have been stopping cars, volunteers handed out fliers and Thurston County dive teams have searched local creeks. Other officers took the contents out Dumpsters looking for clues.

On Monday, K-9 units, search volunteers, police and a helicopter looked all day for the girl but found no sign of her.

The girl's mother reported her missing at Friday night.

"I just need my daughter home," Melissa Baum, the girl's mother told The Aberdeen Daily World. She said she's afraid someone has taken her daughter and away from McCleary, a town of about 1,500.

McCleary Police Chief George Crumb told the newspaper that while his department hoped she ran off, "she's been gone far too long."

Her mother, Melissa Baum, said on FOX News that "if anyone has seen or heard anything — any little thing that they saw and thought, hmm, that's kind of odd," they should call police immediately.

FBI agents have joined the hunt for Lindsey. Grays Harbor County Undersheriff Rick Scott confirmed Tuesday that the search for the missing girl is widening.

Scott told KXRO that several tips have been received and investigators would like to talk to anyone who may have seen anything suspicious in McCleary, a tiny town of only about 1,500, between the hours of 8:30 p.m. and 10 p.m. Friday when Lindsey failed to return home.

Lindsey has been upset over her parents' ongoing divorce and may have run away.
