The Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s help in identifying a subject whose remains were found in 1986.

On March 12, 1986 human remains consisting of a skull were found floating in Weaver Creek, a subsidiary of Yellow River, on the Eglin Air Force Base Property located in Santa Rosa County. The remains were found floating approximately 25 yards from shore.

Since the discovery, the remains have been examined by numerous experts who have concluded the following:

• White female with possible Spanish descent
• Had been in the water 2 – 6 weeks
• Unable to determine cause of death
• Between 20 – 30 years of age
• Between 5’3” to 5’06” in height
• Moderate muscular build & between 115 – 135 lbs.
• Carried at least two children to term
• Smoked cigarettes
• Probably right-handed
• Used drugs to excess by snorting
• Had poor dental hygiene with distinctive dental features
• The skull also indicated partially healed fractures of both the right and left temporary bones that appeared to be at least 1 ½ years old
• Dental Records have been entered into NCIC but have not produced any matches

The first composite was done in 1986 by Cpl. Daniels with the Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office. Recently, a second composite was completed by Deputy Moody with the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office and was aged to 45 years of age due to the victim possibly a heavy drug user that may have resulted in a fatigued, prematurely-aged appearance.

"Body of woman found in Santa Rosa County," Pensacola News Journal, 13 March 1986, 1B.

"The body was badly decomposed," said Larry Pearson, chief deputy for the Santa Rosa County Sheriff's Department. "At this point, we can't tell the cause of death. Or if foul play was involved. But an autopsy will be performed Thursday morning."

Bill Dingwall, "Cause of death may take weeks to determine," Pensacola News Journal, 14 March 1986, 4B.

"The body was in reasonably shallow water," the sheriff said. "The water in that area runs from knee deep to waist deep. There's some indication she'd been in the water from two to six weeks."

Bill Dingwall, "Corpse conceals mystery," Pensacola News Journal, 5 April 1986, 1B, 2B.

She left no clue to her identity. Her hands were gone; they were severed, probably due to decomposition.

"We went back to the creek and searched for the hands," said a sheriff's source. "We never found 'em. We had hoped to get fingerprints."

Initially, lawmen weren't sure whether the body was male or female, white or black.

[...]

"The body was so badly decomposed," Sheriff Mauriece Coffman said at the time of the discovery of the body. "There are indications she'd been in the water from two to six weeks. We have no idea what killed her. But we're treating it as a homicide, mainly because of where the body was found."

Her body was found by several people who were canoeing down Weaver Creek, southeast of here on the Eglin Air Force reservation. That was March 12.

[...]

"We've checked every missing persons report in West Florida," said Sheriff's Investigator Tom Perry. "We haven't come up with a thing. We have no clues, no leads, nothing."

According to Investigator Perry, the woman had been dead anywhere from two to six weeks.

"They're saying she either died of suffocation or drowning," he said. "Which means she could've died from somebody holding a hand over her mouth. Or a pillow over her face. We're definitely looking at a homicide here."
