    http://www.miamiherald.com/news/nati...y/1144619.html

A five-day trip aboard the Carnival Elation has turned into a high-seas murder mystery when a passenger was arrested after returning to port and accused of killing his wife three days into the luxury cruise to Mexico.

A cruise should be a time to get away from all the daily problems and have a relaxing, fun time. It seems that isn't the way it happens for some people. They take their problems with them wherever they go. This woman probably should have gotten away from him instead of going on a cruise with him.

This is so sad. I hope the autopsy and investigation give LE the answers they need to "solve" the case.

    RIP Shirley McGill.

It's just creepy, imo. What was he planning on doing with the body?!

I'd like to see a picture of the husband. She looks like she might have been the victim of abuse, just judging from her posture/facial expression on that picture. Then again, it's a DMV picture, which could explain it.

I don't understand why people just don't get divorced when they can't get along. Wait..yes I do. Greed. People don't want to lose possessions, have to pay alimony, etc. Just walk away. I did, with *nothing*. Best decision I ever made.

I know what you mean oh_gal. My ex put me through hell but at least he didn't kill me.

I'm wondering if this isn't what's happening to a lot of people that go missing on cruises. Instead of a cruise being thought of as a way to relax and maybe mend problems with your marriage, it's a way to get rid of your "problem". Do the deed, push them overboard and then you're thought of as the grieving spouse instead of a murderer.

I wondered the same thing. I am really glad they found her and arrested him before he had the chance to do more.

I wonder if this murder was premeditated or if the husband just snapped during an argument or whatever with his wife.

Strange how he just left the room...what was his next plan and how did he think he would get away with this?

Woman dies on cruise; husband is arrested

Slotter would not provide details about a possible motive or how Shirley McGill was killed. James Ramirez, an investigator with the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office, said an autopsy would be performed today. He did not know when the results would be made public.

FBI agents, ferried by a Coast Guard cutter, boarded the Elation and this morning FBI evidence technicians searched the 2,052-passenger ship when it docked in San Diego.
The FBI has authority in the case under federal maritime law.

McGill will likely make a first appearance in U.S. District Court in San Diego on Friday, said Debra Hartman, a spokeswoman for the U.S. attorney's office.

It wasn't immediately known if McGill had an attorney.

    Thanks Paintr,

The second news link does say that the couple had a dispute in the cabin. So maybe this wasn't premeditated.

The cause of death was not disclosed. The couple lived in Winnetka, a community in the San Fernando Valley. Court records show that they were married in Las Vegas in 2003.

    .....

As many as 40 passengers have been interviewed, Slotter said.
An evidence team boarded the ship yesterday morning to collect forensic evidence from the cabin where the body was found, he said.

You are very welcome, bogeygal. I wonder, since this is under the jurisdiction of the FBI and he has been brought up on federal charges, if he will be facing the death penalty?

BTW read one article that said that Shirley was stabbed but since it has not been confirmed, I didn't post it.

A man is expected to make his first appearance in federal court Friday accused of killing his wife aboard a cruise ship as it headed back to San Diego from a five-day trip to Cabo San Lucas.

    .....

Robert McGill is expected to be charged with murder within the special maritime and territorial jurisdiction of the United States, or murder on the high seas.
