The Newton County Sheriff's Office is asking for help in locating an 83-year-old man that has been missing since Monday.

James Lenington was last seen trying to buy lumber at Lowe's Home Improvement center on West Gibson St. in Jasper.

Witnesses described him as disoriented and said he was short of money, something authorities say was very unusual.

Lennington is described as a white male about 6’1” weighing 165lbs with white hair and brown eyes.

He was driving a 2008 beige Ford F-150 with JMC stenciled on the doors.

Lenington is from the Toledo Bend area.

Missing man's truck found, no sign of James Lennington

The pickup truck of a man that has been missing since Monday was discovered on Saturday in a very rural area known as Scrappin' Valley in north Newton County. So far, there is no sign of 83 year old James Lennington.

Authorities say Lennington's 2009 Ford F-150 was found in an area near Recreational Road 255, about 8 miles east of U.S. Highway 96. On Saturday afternoon, deputies were searching on the ground and from the air. However, Saturday afternoon thunderstorms caused the air search to be halted.

The weather in this area was horrible earlier today..very heavy thunderstorms. I pray Mr. Lenington is okay and is found soon.

Was he known to the store cashiers and workers? If this was unusual then someone must have known his normal demeanor.

Does this indicate maybe a slight stoke? What happened to him that made him disoriented?

I hope he is found soon.

Authorities said Saturday that Lennington’s 2009 Ford F-150 pickup truck had been found on a rural road just east of Highway 87 and just north of Recreational Road 255 in nearby Newton County.

The truck was reportedly empty, but had a half tank of gas and officers believe that it was left there with the engine not running, but with the ignition switch on, and the emergency flashers on until the battery went down.

Those searching the area also reportedly found Lennington’s wallet not far from the truck. Even though the wallet was empty, officers still doubt foul play in that there is evidence that the missing man took the money out of the wallet before he left home.

On Saturday afternoon, deputies searched the area where the truck was found both by ground and by air for Lennington or any piece of evidence. However, the search was called off due to weather and resumed on Sunday without any results.

Investigators say Lennington, who is a resident of the Toledo Bend area, was last seen at the Lowe’s Home Improvement Center on West Gibson Street here in Jasper on Monday, July 13th at about 8:15 p.m.

Officers believe Lennington went to Lowe’s after visiting Andy’s Club at the Ramada Inn, at the intersection of Highways 190 and 96, and then to Rumpy’s Cajun Cowboy on South Wheeler Street, before going to Lowe’s, where he purchased two pieces of lumber that were still in his truck when it was found Saturday.

Friends of Lennington said that he was known to frequent both night spots but that he never got drunk and would only drink one beer as he socialized with those at the clubs and then return home.

Newton County Sheriff Joe Walker said Monday that there were no new leads or information in the search for James Lennington, an 83 year old resident of the Toledo Bend area, who has now been missing for over 3 weeks.

Officers believe Lennington might have been suffering from a stroke, dementia or some other health problem in that witnesses said that he did not seem to be coherent.

Family members told investigators that Lennington suffered from problems with his legs and that he could only walk a short distance.

Task Force created to investigate Lennington disappearance

A task force has been created to concentrate efforts on locating 83-year-old James Lennington, a Toledo Bend man who has been missing for six weeks.

The team consists of Jasper Police Detective Chris Ensign, Newton County Deputies Cynthia Hall and Lasson LeGros, and Texas Ranger Danny Young. The group met at Jasper Police headquarters on Friday morning.

Investigators are reporting no new leads in the case. However, Detective Ensign did note that the team has several persons of interest after saying that the case is being looked at from two different angles; as a scenario involving a medical issue, and a scenario involving foul play. Ensign also said that he has received several statements from those who last saw the man.

Sheriff wants volunteers to help search for missing man

The Newton County Sheriff's Office is appealing for volunteers to help assist in what investigators call the final search for James Lennington.

Lennington, 83, disappeared on July 28 off FM 255 in Newton County.

Searchers in helicopters and on the ground have tried to find Lennington.

“We don’t give up on the hope of finding this man," said Newton County Sheriff Joe Walker. "However, with no leads or indication of his wherebouts, it is hard to keep putting man hours in the same place. This will be the last search in the area where Lennington's vehicle was recovered. The search will be far more intense than ever before. I ask for volunteers to come out and assist this final time. My staff and resources are limited.”

The question still remains: where is James Lenington? Officers with the Newton County Sheriff’s Department, Jasper County Emergency Corps and the Texas Equusearch group, along with Burkeville firefighters and many residents of the area joined together on Saturday for what Newton County Sheriff Joe Walker said would be the final search of an area where the missing man’s truck was found.

However, at the end of the day, there was still no evidence as to where Lenington was or what happened to him. In all, it is estimated that around 90 people participated in the search, which was the third of the area.

Early on, officers believed that Lenington had suffered a stroke, dementia or some other medical problem that caused him to become lost. However, word is that the investigation is now focusing on possible foul play.

I wouldn't be surprised if that's him based on where his truck was found (north of Jasper in a rural area)..... If so, at least his body can finally be returned to his family.
