The plot thickens in the case of Joseph Burgess—the man who investigators say killed a deputy in a shootout in a Jemez mountain cabin.

The FBI released a photograph of another man they think Burgess may have killed in the Jemez mountains.

They say he's David Eley, and it was Eley's gun that Burgess used to shoot Deputy Joe Harris.

Several agencies are now investigating Eley's disappearance. State police say Eley's family reported him missing in 2007.

Little is known about Eley. Years ago, he lived near UNM. His former landlord says at one point Eley worked for both Los Alamos and Sandia National Labs.

She says she last saw Eley three years ago when he decided to sell all of his stuff and move to the Jemez.

...The Office of the Medical Investigator has positively identified the human remains found Friday and Saturday in the Jemez Mountains as those of David Eley. ...

...The Eley family released a statement late Saturday night. It reads:

This is a very personal matter for us, and we have no further comment about the case as we grieve David's loss. We are grateful for the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to bring David's case to resolution...

Rest in Peace David. Prayers for your family and friends.

From July 2009:

http://www.foxnews.com/story/2009/0...couples-in-separate-beach-murders-police.html

Two couples fatally shot more than 30 years apart while camping in different countries may have been victims of the same man: a drifter who authorities say was part of a Christian commune and disapproved of relationships between unmarried couples.

Joseph Henry Burgess, 62, who died in a July 16 shootout with New Mexico sheriff's deputies, had been wanted in Canada as a suspect in the 1972 murders of two university students on a Vancouver Island beach, and may be linked to more killings...

On June 21, 1972, the bodies of Ann Durrant, 20, and Lief Karlsson, 21, were found in their sleeping bag, shot multiple times in the head at point-blank range on Vancouver Island. Burgess was among hundreds of hippies on the island that summer, setting up their tents on the beach, Creally said.

Another young Christian couple, Lindsay Cutshall, 22, and Jason Allen, 26, were found shot to death with a rifle in their sleeping bags. The couple were weeks away from being married and were working at a nearby Christian rafting camp.

“Obviously it’s very similar circumstances with similar religious connotations,” Creally said in 2007 about the two double murders.

Garcia said Monday he knew California police had been investigating Burgess in connection to the Jenner beach murder, but said he couldn’t comment further on the case. “There were some similarities in the way [the California murder] was done, but can we conclusively say it was actually him? Unless we have factual evidence, I can’t say,” Garcia said.

So where was Burgess and what was he doing between 1972 and 2004?
