NV - Maureen Fields, 41, Nye County, 16 Feb 2006

    29 July 09

Off a desert highway, about 15 miles from her home in the southern tip of Nevada, the mystery of Maureen Fields' disappearance began with the discovery of her abandoned car.

Investigators found the 41-year-old woman's 2004 green Hyundai just across the California border on February 16, 2006. It was one day after her husband, Paul Fields, said he last saw her.

A high-tech plane is helping solve missing persons cases all across the country. Detectives in Nye County brought in that plane and its expert search team hoping for some answers in a missing person's case.

The plane looks like a toy. It's remote controlled and could fit in your backseat. But it has software that no helicopter, airplane or search and rescue team does and it only flies 300 feet above the ground.

The three-foot long drone may be the key to solving Maureen Fields' murder case. The plane flew over the Inyo County, California desert where Maureen's car was found two and a half years ago. "W'll see things out there that just shouldn't be there. We'll be looking for her clothes, skeletal remains. We fly this thing 300 to 400 feet high and identify a small Styrofoam cup or a tennis shoe," said Tim Miller with Texas EquuSearch.

DNA links California sex offender to missing Pahrump woman

When Maureen Fields went missing in Pahrump in February 2006, suspicion immediately fell to her husband, Paul.

The whispers gave way to an intense police investigation a short time later, when her car was found abandoned, the keys still in the ignition, in an empty desert valley just west of town.

But after six years spent trying to find the 41-year-old woman and collect enough evidence to charge her husband with murder, investigators are exploring a new lead in the case that points to an 81-year-old sex offender in a California jail.

Authorities on Wednesday linked 81-year-old Keith Holmes of Pearblossom, Calif., to DNA on pantyhose found in Maureen Fields' vehicle.

Nye County Detective David Boruchowitz said he's already interviewed Holmes, who's an incarcerated, registered sex offender who began traveling to Pahrump around 2006. But deputies say they want to talk with people who know him.

After years of scrutinizing Fields in his wife's disappearance, southern Nevada investigators announced they have a new lead in the case: A previously unidentified DNA sample found on pantyhose in Maureen Fields' car has been matched to an 81-year-old, incarcerated sex offender from Southern California.
The man, Keith Wayne Holmes, is in California's sex offender database for annoying or molesting a minor and assault with the intent to commit rape. He was arrested in Palmdale, Calif., in June 2011 for allegedly trying to entice a 12-year-old girl into his vehicle, and then following her in the car until her mother intervened.

Fields said the investigation has taken its toll.
"The problem with this whole case is the cops. That's the whole problem. They just keep coming back to me, keep coming back to me," he said. "I don't know how I've actually survived it. I can honestly see why people kill themselves. It's been almost seven years now."
The new DNA link, which was actually matched in August but not publicized until this week, has brought an onslaught of tips into the sheriff's office. But detectives note they're still keeping tabs on all possibilities.
"This is a totally separate branch of the investigation," Boruchowitz said. "We have not cleared anyone in this case. We still consider it an open investigation."

An 80-year-old registered sex offender was arrested Saturday for allegedly trying to kidnap a young girl in Palmdale.

Investigators said Keith Wayne Holmes tried to entice a 12-year-old girl into his car just before 11 a.m. near Pearblossom Highway and 85th Street East.

The girl refused and kept walking, but Holmes allegedly continued to drive slowly alongside her until the girl's mother, who was walking behind the child, intervened. Holmes allegedly sped away but the mother was able to get the car's license plate number when he came to a red light.

Sheriff's deputies later detained Holmes during a traffic stop and the girl and her mother identified him as the suspect.

Investigators said they found items in the car that were consistent with intent to kidnap. Holmes said he had rope and duct tape in his car, but that he uses them for boating.

    Holmes is dead:

    http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/201...th_valley.html

For one brief moment, the Nevada detective thought he’d finally learn what happened to Maureen Fields years ago in the desert. Leaning over an elderly sex offender who lay in a prison hospice bed in California, he asked the frail man if he knew Fields’ husband, Paul. "I think so," the man answered.

Eager to hear what the man had to say, the detective continued: "Do you remember how you knew him?" The man’s head lolled to one side and a vacant look came over his face. There was a long pause, as the fog of dementia rolled back in. "No," he rasped.

And with that, the brief spark of hope extinguished, just another entry on the cold case’s long list of lost chances.
