    OR - Elvia Morales, 14, Woodburn, 5 August 2009

Police looking for missing 14-year-old girl

Police are still searching for a kidnapping suspect and his 14-year-old victim.

Elvia Morales, 14, was reportedly taken from her Woodburn home sometime before 9 Wednesday morning by a family friend.

Detectives say Juan Martinez-Martinez, 38, drove up to the home where the teen lived and forcibly removed her from the house against her will.

    [snip]

An Amber Alert has not been issued yet because the police do not have a complete description of the car used.

FBI agents think they may already be in California, driving a dark-blue sedan, possibly a Saturn model, with unknown license plates.

Are you KIDDING me? It sounds like they have a pretty damn good description of a vehicle. And pictures of the child and suspect. Ugh.

Family says kidnapping suspect was a friend

Police in Woodburn are looking for a teenager who was kidnapped on Wednesday.

According to police, a man who worked with the father of 13-year-old Elvia Morales went to the girl's home and took her. Her 17-year-old cousin reportedly tried to stop the man, but was unable to keep him from taking the girl.

Earlier reports said Morales was 14 years old but KATU has learned she is actually 13 years old.

Family members said they considered the kidnapping suspect, 36-year-old Juan Martinez-Martinez, a family friend and that he sometimes had meals with them.

    [snip]

The FBI is helping with the investigation and officials are trying to determine whether an Amber Alert should be issued. Police fear the suspect may be driving to California.

Here's a clue. ISSUE THE ALERT!

    Abduction has occurred? Yes
    Under 18? Yes
In serious danger? Yes ("police believe Morales is in serious danger")
Descriptive info? Yes, of child and abductor, and even a description of a car

Wait too much longer, and the Alert will be useless.

FBI assisting in search for Woodburn kidnap girl

FBI agents are working with Woodburn police to locate a 14-year-old girl kidnapped from her home.

Elvia Morales was home with her 17-year-old cousin when a young man came to the house around 7 a.m. Wednesday and took her away, Woodburn Capt. Jason Alexander said. The 17-year-old tried to intervene, but was pushed aside.

The suspect is Juan Martinez-Martinez, 36, a man who worked with the girl’s father as a field hand, Alexander said. He could not comment on the suspect's motive in taking the girl.

"I'm not sure how close a relationship they had," Alexander said of the two men. "I know he had been over to the house a few times."

Woodburn police: 'ongoing, inappropriate' relationship between kidnapped girl and suspect

Authorities described an “ongoing, inappropriate relationship” took place between a kidnapped 14-year-old Woodburn girl and a 36-year-old man accused of taking her from her home.

Nothing else is mentioned about this "relationship" though....

Search continues for teen, father says he had one call with her

    [snip]

The girl's father said he wasn't aware of any communication between his daughter and Martinez-Martinez and that he rushed home as soon as he learned what had happened. He said he managed to reach his daughter by phone but she told him she didn't want anyone to look for her, she wanted to be alone and there was nothing wrong with her.

But her father is still worried and hasn't been able to reach her by phone again. He said he still considers Martinez-Martinez a friend but doesn't understand why the man would take his daughter.

    Is this for real?

Detectives say Juan Martinez-Martinez, 38, drove up to the home where the teen lived and forcibly removed her from the house against her will.

What kind of reporting is this? What's going on? The child is 13yo and a 36yo man abducted her with force...At the very least that's kidnapping!

she has an ongoing 'inappropriate' relationship with this man...yikes! Don't they know he's a pedophile who has successfully groomed his victim.

and no amber alert...unless this is a joke of some kind, I hope Mark Klass is all over this one. To whom can I write?

A link with the beautiful child's face and the sick...whatever! What can LE possibly be thinking that an Amber Alert hasn't been called????

If kidnapping a child doesn't qualify for an Amber Alert - - - what does?

    From the Feministing blog:
The trend to suggest that young women of color are lascivious continues. The Woodburn police department is suggesting a teenager has had "inappropriate relations" with the person who kidnapped her, to suggest she is not in danger.

An interesting observation. Even after LE was aware of the relationship, they aren't sure if she's in danger?

    (snipped and bolded by steadfast)

What is wrong with this father??? Maybe he wouldn't consider him a friend any more if he understood why the man took his daughter. Does he really not get it?

I agree, Steadfast. In this other article, he says he "doesn't understand" why this guy would take his daughter. Ummm, wake up! He also said she probably "won't turn up" if she doesn't want to come back home. I think that even if she does want to come back home, this guy isn't just going to let her.

    Kidnapping involved inappropriate relationship

"When I was on my way here she called and said, 'Dad, don't worry. I'm fine right now,'" Morales said in Spanish. "That's all I was able to talk to her about."

Sebastian Morales said Elvia's older cousin was pushed out of the way as Martinez-Martinez grabbed Elvia and walked out of the house. He said he considered Martinez-Martinez part of the family and doesn't understand why he would take his daughter.

"I don't know what he's thinking or what he's planning to do," he said. "I don't know if she's in danger. I don't know what he's up to."

Martinez-Martinez has family in California, and Sebastian Morales fears that's where he could be taking his daughter.

"They've probably seen the news, that police are looking for her," he said. "She's probably not going to turn up if she doesn't want to come back home."
