UPDATED: Search for Hasanni Campbell turns up child's sweater at edge of woods

Volunteers searching for missing 5-year-old Hasanni Campbell today said they found clothing similar to what the boy was said to be wearing when his foster father reported his disappearance.

The gray children's sweatshirt was found at the end of Chabot Road in the Oakland Hills shortly after 50 people began searching that area, search organizer Sherri Miller said. The area is slightly more than a mile east from where Hasanni's foster father reported last seeing him.

Volunteers flagged down some police officers and in a preliminary search of the area those officers found an adult sock and another piece of material nearby.

Alameda County Sheriff's deputies brought out search dogs to further canvass the area, which is just north of Highway 24.

The sweatshirt appeared to have been there for some time, with dirt and grass stains on it, Sgt. Arturo Bautista said. Police did not immediately handle the sweatshirt but said it could be a child's size.

"We found it right at the start of the woods," Miller said. "It could possibly turn out to be nothing. Police told us they're on the fence."

The area where the sweatshirt was found had not been searched before by volunteers, Miller said. A police spokesman could not immediately say whether police had searched there.

Although this is what I expect, it's difficult to read about these findings knowing the clothing could be Hasanni's.

If this is Hasanni's clothing, it would make sense that his AFO (brace) would be found with them. Socks are worn under AFOs. His braces would have to be taken off to remove his socks. Unless of course, his brace was disposed of separately knowing that would be his most identifiable item.

If the sweatshirt in the picture is the one they found it couldn't possibly be HC's. It's much too big. It also has a placket w/buttons. Good grief, he wouldn't be able to walk with that thing on.

UPDATED: Missing 5-Year-Old's Clothes Possibly Unearthed In Oakland

Volunteers searching for missing 5-year-old Hasanni Campbell have discovered clothes similar to those the boy disappeared in over a month ago at the end of a road in Oakland.

About one o'clock Sunday afternoon, volunteers searching a hillside near the end of Chabot Road in Oakland found at least one item of clothing, which they and Oakland police say appears to be similar to one Hasanni was wearing before he disappeared.

“We were walking and we saw some clothes and we picked it up and it was a small sweatshirt," said one volunteer who asked that we not use her full name.

Police say the volunteers searchers found a small gray sweatshirt-- described as weather-worn and partially buried in the dry, soft dirt at the end of the street.

"It's covered with a lot of dirt. There's grass on it. It's ripped in places,” said Oakland police Sgt. Bautista. “We don't really want to handle it, because if there is any evidence, we don't want to contaminate it."

Five-year-old Hasanni Campbell was reported to be wearing a gray sweatshirt and gray pants when he disappeared over a month ago.

Searchers say they found two other items close by, including a red sock and a piece of a gray blanket.

The volunteers called Oakland police officers to the scene-- a sloping hill just beneath the access road connecting Tunnel Road and Highway 24.

As volunteers prayed, Alameda County sheriff's department k-9 units combed the hill for related items.

Investigators say it's too soon to tell whether the sweatshirt is Hasanni's.

"We don't wanna give anybody any false hope or things of that nature,” said Sgt. Bautista. “Right now , we're just gonna follow our standard protocol and secure the scene and have the technicians, evidence technicians recover the item. And at some point, we'll determine whether it was his or not."

Marc Klaas of the Klaas Kids Foundation says the search for Hasanni has been hampered by questions about whether his foster father, Louis Ross, is telling the truth about the boy's disappearance outside a Rockridge shoe store a month ago.

"If he's not telling the truth, then we have no idea where the little boy is,” said Klaas. “If he is telling the truth, then that almost means somebody picked the little boy up in a car and drove him out very, very quickly."

The woman who found the sweatshirt said this quiet cul-de-sac simply seemed like a logical place to search for signs of the missing boy.

"I knew it was a desolate area and it's not that far from where the kid supposedly went missing,” the volunteer, who didn’t want us to use her name, said. “And I thought, well, surely someone's looked up here because there's all of this space."

Jennifer Campbell-- the boy's foster mother-- declined to talk to KTVU earlier Sunday about the search for Hasanni.

I think the grey sweatshirt over the sign thing has to belong to someone else - a member of the search party? A police office quoted back up somewhere said they didn't want to touch the clothing for fear of contamination, so I hardly think they'd drape it over a sign out in the open.

Foster Dad Says Sweat Shirt Is Not Hasanni's
    Sep 13, 2009 5:38 pm US/Pacific

Volunteer search teams found a gray sweat shirt they thought might have belonged to Hasanni Campbell, a 5-year-old boy who has been missing for more than a month.

But Hasanni's foster father, Louis Ross told reporters late Sunday that the clothing did not belong to the missing boy.

Hasanni Campbell was reported missing on Aug. 10 by Ross. Ross said the boy was wearing a gray sweat shirt at the time.

Oakland police Sgt. Arturo Bautista says the shirt was found buried at the end of a road in the Oakland hills Sunday.

    Police were searching the area.

Also--that dead end of Chabot is so visible--there are houses on that street. It would be a dumb place to go and bury clothes and expect to not be seen, IMO.

I don't think that is Hasanni's or the logo information would have been included.

By the description "gray sweatshirt" I pictured a Hanes sweatshirt (my son had several in different colors -- red, blue, gray, black and yellow).

Hey, that picture up there... on the standing tablet, it says EBMUD

That would be the "East Bay Municipal Utility District"

why it matters I couldn't tell you but I hate abbreviations....

    Will post picture shortly
I was thinking/hoping that the dark gray sweatshirt that was draped over the EBMUD stand belonged to one of the searchers and a photog accidentally took a picture thinking it was the sweatshirt they found.

I also pictured Hasanni's sweatshirt as being that standard light mottled gray color of most sweatshirts. With matching sweatpants...so where are the sweatpants ?

Looking at Google maps, it looks as though there are trees between the home and the path at the dead end. The path looks more like a dirt road that can be driven on. All of the backs of the homes along that dirt road look to have trees in the yards. The other side of the dirt road/path seems to be nothing but clumps of trees. It looks like it could be easy to go unnoticed in that area. Especially if the residents were all at work at the time.

Hi Momtective didn't see you were on, thank you for modifying the map I had just posted a series of maps (one of which was yours) to the astro's thread so Soulscape could have a look.

I think you're modified map will serve much better.

About LR coming out so quickly to say that it isn't Hassani's sweatshirt.

    1. How can he be so sure? Did he go to the scene himself?

    2. If he didn't, then he just gave himself away like KC did during the blanchard park fiasco. KWIM? He knows it's not Hassani's because he knows where Hassani's grey sweatshirt is...?
