The family of a missing hunter isn't giving up their search, even though authorities called off their crews over the weekend.

Mel Nadel, 61, has been missing for a week after getting separated from a hunting group outside Pecos.

Nadel's family is following the Pecos River south near Val Kilmer's property hoping to find some sign of Nadel.

State police called off their search on Saturday after dozens of rescuers didn't find any clues.

Mel is still missing. This is an interesting story about keeping on with life when a loved one goes missing. It features Mel's family and has some more background about both Mel and the circumstances under which he went missing.

Missing hunter: Family picking up the pieces

. . .

"It is starting to sink in," said Edna Nadel. Nearly three weeks ago, her husband, Melvin Nadel, 61, disappeared while on a hunting trip in the Pecos Wilderness near Elk Mountain.

She is starting to understand he might never be found, and never come home.

. . .

With no evidence of foul play and no sign of him in the wilderness, people speculate.

"The police kind of hinted maybe he ran off with another woman," Edna said of her husband of 19 years.

Investigators found a new pair of women's pants in his Jeep at the hunting camp, which was locked and had all his gear inside, including his cell phone and GPS. The only things missing were his bow and pistol.

Edna wasn't surprised by the pants. "My husband is a little guy. He's from the rock 'n roll era and he liked his pants to fit tight. It didn't matter to him if they were women's jeans, if they fit."

. . .

Police also found a large man's jacket in Mel's Jeep and are trying to find out who it belongs to. But hunting partner Joe Muñiz said the coat wasn't in the Jeep when they originally looked inside. He thinks it belongs to one of the searchers.

. . .

Mel never hunted far from camp. He told his partners he was going to walk down a trail a few yards, then go back to camp at dusk to wait for them. When they showed up he wasn't there, just his Jeep.

Scent dogs later trailed Mel down the exact trail he said he would use. They lost his scent about 150 yards from camp at a place where he had stopped, according to coordinates in his GPS unit. His hunting partners think that means he turned around and went back to camp, like he said he would.

Edna Nadel stood in the middle of a grass-covered campsite surrounded by a dense forest near Elk Mountain, deep in the Santa Fe National Forest. Her 62-year-old husband, Mel, carrying only a bow and a pistol, disappeared a year ago from this place while on an elk-hunting trip.

Eric Roybal, a Pecos native who had spent his life exploring these mountains, drove Edna to this spot. He had helped search for her husband. But this was the first time they had met.

An attorney for the wife of Mel Nadel, an Eldorado resident who went missing a year ago while on a hunting trip in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, wants the state to issue a death certificate.

Santa Fe lawyer Ronald Boyd filed a lawsuit Aug. 25 in state District Court in Santa Fe seeking a state-issued a death certificate for Nadel.

"The objective is to get a death certificate issued so Edna Nadel can get financial assistance such as insurance and Social Security benefits," Boyd said.

Mel was featured in David Paulides Missing 411: the hunted.

Details of Disappearance

Nadel was last seen bow hunting with two friends in the Elk Mountain area in the Santa Fe National Forest near Pecos, New Mexico on September 6, 2009. He took a .44 Special revolver and a camouflage-print Martin bow with black and white zebra-striped arrows.

At 4:30 p.m., Nadel left the campsite. He told his friends he would not travel far and would be back by nightfall, but he never returned and has never been heard from again.

He left his 2001 Jeep Cherokee with the New Mexico license plate number HKJ664 near the campsite with most of his gear locked inside, including his backpack, cellular phone and GPS unit. He normally carried the GPS with him while he hunted to keep from getting lost.

Dogs tracked Nadel's scent for about 50 yards from the camp, down the trail he said he would use. His loved ones stated he had become lost once before and after that experience, he preferred to stick close to the campsite.

At the time of his disappearance, Nadel owned a Pilates Fitness Plus gym in the 1000 block of south Saint Francis Drive Santa Fe, New Mexico. He formerly owned a jewelry store. He was a popular fitness instructor and also has a first-degree black belt in tae kwon do. When hunting, he prefers to sit in a blind and wait for game to pass by rather than go looking for it.

Nadel was born in Brooklyn, New York, and moved to New Mexico with his wife and daughter in 1991. He homeschooled his daughter and was close to her; she was a community college student at the time of his disappearance. His wife stated he had no health problems.

Nadel's family doesn't believe he left of his own accord, and police can't find any evidence of foul play in his disappearance. He is presumed to have become lost or injured in the wilderness.

<<Distinguishing Characteristics: Scars, Marks, Tattoos: Caucasian male. Melvin has two full arm sleeves of tattoos: a dragon, a pentagram, Baphomet, a Tae Kwon Do symbol, mouth with vampire fangs, guitar

Details of Disappearance: Melvin and his hunting buddies, Joe and Kevin went hunting. His buddies walked ahead to try to push the animals toward Melvin, who remained close to the base camp. He had a slightly injured knee at this time because days prior, he twisted it after stepping into a gopher hole. By the time that the sun had set, Joe and Kevin went back to camp and Melvin was nowhere to be found. Melvin had set up a hunting blind, but that had been deconstructed and put back into his unlocked Burgundy Jeep Wrangler. Inside of his Jeep was also a half-eaten Subway sandwich, his GPS unit, and his phone.

They called out for him, but got no reply. It got dark, so they fired two shots in the air to see if maybe he was lost and needed them to go find him. Two shots were returned, so they quickly got into their cars and turned their bright lights on, honking and looking for him.>>
