GUILTY CA - Thuy Thi Le for stabbing her 3 & 5yo daughters, Westminster, 2009

How awful! Prayers for the 5 year old, I hope she lives.

October 2014:

In the weeks before she stabbed her two daughters, Thuy Thi Le said she believed she was cursed by voodoo and that demon ghosts haunted her home...

For the second time, a trial began Monday in Orange County Superior Court for the 43-year-old Garden Grove woman convicted by another jury earlier this year of stabbing her two young daughters. That jury found Le guilty on two counts of attempted murder in the attack five years ago but was hung on whether the stabbings were premeditated...

The girls have since recovered and are living with their father, Vining said..

Le thought her home was haunted by demon ghosts and believed that Greer, her live-in boyfriend, was trying to harm her and their two daughters, Vining said.
About a week before the incident, she suffered a mental and physical breakdown and was taken to a hospital. A doctor prescribed an antidepressant but Le refused to take the medication, Vining said.
Le later told police that she stabbed the girls so Greer could not harm them.

Deputy District Attorney John Christl argued that Le planned the stabbings as revenge for her failed relationship with Greer.

November 2014:

An Orange County Superior Court jury on Friday found that a 43-year-old Garden Grove woman was legally sane when she stabbed her two young daughters five years ago....

Le’s attorney claimed that at the time of the attack Le was suffering from a psychotic disorder following the loss of her house, her massage-parlor business and the death of her grandmother.
Deputy District Attorney John Christl argued that Le planned the stabbings to get revenge for a failed relationship with the girls’ father, Robert Greer. Greer, a night-shift taxi driver, was abusing methamphetamine and neglecting Le, ignoring her warnings that something bad was going to happen, the attorney said.

Oct 2014:

An Orange County jury found Monday that a Garden Grove woman’s non-fatal knife attacks on her 5- and 3-year-old daughters five years ago was done with premeditation and deliberation, making her eligible for a life sentence.

Thuy Thi Le in February was previously convicted of attempted murder and child abuse, but a jury in February deadlocked 11-1 in favor of sentencing enhancements for premeditation and deliberation and Orange County Superior Court Judge M. Marc Kelly declared a mistrial on the enhancements only.

On Wednesday, the current panel will begin hearing evidence in the sanity phase of the trial.

The panel rejected the findings of four psychological experts who concluded that Le was insane at the time of the Sept. 16, 2009, attacks. Three of those experts testified in the sanity phase of her trial.

Deputy District Attorney John Christl said the defendant’s statements on the day of the crime provided better evidence than the doctors’ opinions. Le told investigators that her live-in boyfriend wanted to leave her and she believed he didn’t love their children, Christl said.

“It was an angry act, a selfish act,” the prosecutor said. “She said he was not listening to her needs or wants.”

The psychological experts said Le suffered from a variety of maladies such as schizophrenia, delusions, paranoia and breaks with reality, Christl said...

“She thought her kids had been switched out. She didn’t know if they were her kids,” he told jurors. “She didn’t know who or what Robert was… She thought Robert was able to read her thoughts and was torturing her mentally.”

Le also erroneously thought the FBI was “after her”; that she was being “chased by gangsters”; and that the rental home in Garden Grove where the family was living was haunted and that there was a “demon curse” on it, Vining said.

When a physician prescribed medicine for her, she did not take it because “she was afraid they were trying to poison her,” Vining said.
