Search intensifies for missing McCleary girl
12:26 PM PDT on Friday, September 25, 2009

Friday morning Grays Harbor Sheriff's Office investigators, along with FBI agents and members of the King County Sheriff's office, began serving search warrants in and around the McCleary area.

The warrants allow investigators a chance to thoroughly search private properties.

A Grays Harbor Sheriff's Office spokesperson said the search warrants were a result of their "continuing investigation."

"They [the serving of the search warrants] started this morning and will continue through the weekend," said Grays Harbor County Sgt. Steve Shumate.

Investigators would not say where the locations were or if anyone was specifically being investigated as a suspect in Baum's disappearance.

The searches, both in the McCleary area, cover so much ground that agents were brought in from the FBI, along with detectives in the Grays Harbor County Sheriff's Office and King County Sheriff's Office.

But an official said Friday that authorities have received "new, credible information" that there are locations in the McCleary area that may yield evidence to assist in the investigation.

Search warrants are being executed at those locations on Friday, and may continue throughout the weekend, said a spokesman for the Grays Harbor County Sheriff's Office.

*At one site, FBI investigators in protective clothing were probing an area near an old, abandoned house and large shed about one mile southwest of McCleary.

*At another location, about one-eighth mile away near the intersection of Old Sand Creek Road, North Sand Creek Road and Foreman Road, a mobile King County Sheriff's Office command post was set up at a residence surrounded by junk cars.

Officials said the people living in the house on the outskirts of town were asked to leave after receiving a search warrant.

Sgt. Steve Shumate of the Grays Harbor County Sheriff's Office said investigators spent hours Friday combing cars, gathering fibers, hairs, even the smallest clue that could tell them what happened to Lindsey.

Deputies acting on “credible” tip
Friday, September 25, 2009 11:15 AM PDT

“Credible information has been developed that there are locations in the McCleary area that may contain evidence that may assist investigators in locating Lindsey Baum,” Sgt. Steve Shumate of the Grays Harbor Sheriff’s Office read from a statement this morning. “This activity is expected through the weekend. Due to the sensitive nature of the investigation and to reduce the risk of compromise, no further details of the current investigative activity will be released.”

The Sheriff’s Office, the FBI, the King County Sheriff’s Office and other regional law enforcement agencies are serving the search warrants, Shumate said.

He said that community members may notice the increased police presence today and through the weekend.

The Sheriff’s Office mobile command center has returned to McCleary, Shumate added, at least through the weekend. During the past few weeks, investigators had been working from Montesano.

“We’re just getting started with the search warrants,” Shumate said this morning. “I wish I could say more but we can’t jeopardize the investigation.”

Supporters of Baum planned to conduct a candlelight vigil Saturday to mark three months since she went missing.

The Grays Harbor County sheriff's office says deputies started serving search warrants Friday in the McCleary area in the search for a missing 11-year-old girl.

Sgt. Steve Shumate told KXRO more warrants would be served through the weekend in an operation involving the FBI and the King County sheriff's office.

Shumate says investigators have been following leads and conducting interviews that identified areas that may contain information about the disappearance of Lindsey Baum. She disappeared the night of June 26 while walking home from a friend's house.

Evidence was been collected from a 10-acre property Friday after detectives served a search warrant in connection with the disappearance of Lindsey Baum, detectives said.

The Grays Harbor Sheriff's Office, the FBI and the King County Sheriff's Office served the search warrants Friday morning and expect the continue searching through the weekend.

“We are looking obviously for the clothing that she was last seen wearing, we're looking for any sort of trace evidence that might be related back to Lindsey Baum," said Sgt. Steve Shumate of the Grays Harbor Sheriff’s Office.

All four members of the family who live on property are being interviewed, but police said nobody is being called a suspect.

Neighbors said they don’t think police will find a thing.

"I just think they've got the wrong family. I'm sure they've got some sort of evidence or something, but I'm sure they've got the wrong family," said one neighbor who did not give his name.

The search warrant includes items such as hair, fibers and clothing Lindsey was last wearing -- anything that could lead investigators to her whereabouts, officials told Thompson.

SEARCH WARRANTS SERVED IN LINDSEY BAUM CASE
September 25, 2009
<snipped>
The Grays Harbor County Sheriff, FBI and other agencies are serving search warrants in the McCleary area over the next three days. Sheriff Sergeant Steve Shumate says the search is related to the three month long search for Lindsey Baum, an 11 year old McCleary girl who went missing while walking home from a friend's house on the night of June 26th. Shumate says that since the disappearance, investigators have been following leads and conducting interviews, a process he says led to credible information being developed that there are areas in McCleary that may contain information on Lindsey's disappearance. Shumate says due to the ongoing investigation more information is not being released at this time.

Investigators will be out again Saturday searching for clues in the disappearance of 11-year-old Lindsey Baum – three months to the day she vanished while walking home from a friend's house.

Friday morning, Grays Harbor Sheriff's Office investigators, along with FBI agents and members of the King County Sheriff's Office, began serving search warrants in and around the McCleary area. The warrants allow investigators a chance to thoroughly search private properties.

"They [the serving of the search warrants] started this morning and will continue through the weekend," said Grays Harbor County Sgt. Steve Shumate.

Investigators would not say where the locations were or if anyone was specifically being investigated as a suspect in Baum's disappearance.

Approximately 50 searchers will be working through the weekend.

Detectives informed Lindsey's mother, Melissa Baum about the search, but didn't give her a lot of specifics.

Search expanding for missing McCleary girl

The FBI is in McCleary to help local investigators search property south of town. The property is several acres large with buildings, vehicles, and a lot of junk.

A roadblock is keeping people away from the area.

Lindsey's mother, Melissa, is excited by the news of a search, but she candidly says she is losing enthusiasm as the day wears on. "I was elated. I was hopeful. I was excited. I thought this is it. They've got something. It's become more cautious now, a little bit of a letdown from the morning."

Still, she says she remains hopeful her daughter will come home to her.

"I felt it from the beginning that she's close by. I don't think she's far away. I'm not saying she's here in McCleary, but I know there's a local connection," said Melissa.

"The information that investigators have developed obviously gives us hope that we're going to find something that will lead us to the location of Lindsey Baum," Sgt. Steve Shumate told KIRO Radio.

Shumate says investigators have been following leads and conducting interviews that identified areas in McCleary, including both residences and vehicles, that may contain information about the disappearance of Lindsey Baum.
